Sky Sports reveal Fonseca meeting – but other candidates set for talks as D-day approaches

Sky Sports have confirmed that the new owners of Newcastle United held remote talks with Paulo Fonseca yesterday.

That said, Keith Downie’s latest update states that the consortium want to speak with fellow contenders before making a final decision on who will replace Steve Bruce.

Those other candidates appear to include Eddie Howe and Lucien Favre, with Sky Sports stating last night that they were also in the running for the NUFC job alongside the former Roma boss.

Here’s what Downie has had to say this in a 5pm update for Newcastle United fans:

Hopefully this proves Jim White got it wrong (not for the first time) earlier today, with him stating that the consortium have decided to appoint an English manager with ‘Premier League experience’ on a temporary basis.

As of Thursday tea-time, here’s how the bookies (Sky Bet) have it, with Fonseca the favourite, followed by Howe, Favre and Lampard:

  • Paulo Fonseca – 4/6
  • Eddie Howe – 6/1
  • Lucien Favre – 6/1
  • Frank Lampard – 8/1
  • Roberto Martinez – 9/1
  • Steven Gerrard – 16/1
  • Graeme Jones – 25/1
  • Antonio Conte – 28/1
  • Unai Emery – 28/1
  • Brendan Rodgers – 33/1
