Palace 1-1 Newcastle: Wilson magic & VAR help Jones’ Mags earn fortunate point

A disappointing display at Selhurst Park and a difficult watch for Newcastle United fans, but it’s a point – and one we were lucky to hold onto in the end.

After Christian Benteke’s header gave the hosts a 1-0 lead early in the second half, Callum Wilson scored a stunning overhead kick to hand us a point.

It looked like Palace would take all three in the 89th minute when Benteke slammed home another header, however VAR came to our rescue as – just like it did at Watford – as Guehi was guilty of a blatant shirt pull on Ciaran Clark.

With Watford pulling off a stunning 5-2 win at Everton, Southampton and Burnley drawing and a struggling Leeds equalising in the 92nd minute against Wolves, a point isn’t really enough for a Newcastle United side still looking for win number one of the season.

Sadly, we didn’t play like a team believing they’d win and spent most of the game camped in our own half. We did defend better and didn’t fold under the pressure, however the lack of quality on the ball combined with the negative set up was tough to watch at times.

Graeme Jones made two changes, replacing Joe Willock and Joelinton with Emil Krafth and Ryan Fraser – a move that saw us revert to a five-man defence.

Here’s what he had to say when asked about those changes:

“So, from Emil Krafth and from Ryan Fraser, they have trained really well, they have showed me that they want to be in the team, they want to be part of things. Both international footballers, both good Premier League experience. SO I’m expecting a good positive performance from them.”

As for the game itself, it was a pretty grim opening 20 minutes.

Gallagher was being given too much space, we were sitting far too deep, not putting enough pressure on the ball and should’ve went 1-0 down after Benteke struck the post from a header he really had to score from.

Aside from a scramble in the box that saw Wilson hit the side netting and one counter attack which ended in a poor final ball from Saint-Maximin, the travelling Toon Army were given nothing to shout about across the opening half an hour.

We had the ability to do damage with Wilson, Fraser and ASM in attack – even if the latter was having a shocker – but our inability to keep the ball and get good service into our front three was painful to watch over the first 45, highlighted by Palace’s 79% possession.

We had to push up – even if this low block was seeing us look better solid defensively and more compact.

Heading into half time, it felt like we’d be holding on for a point at best if nothing changed, which wasn’t really what we were looking for as a winless side set to face Chelsea next weekend!

The second half was a similar story, sadly. Only this time Palace found a breakthrough just 10 minutes after the restart.

After another abysmal pass was easily intercepted – this time the culprit was Sean Longstaff – Palace broke, got the ball wide and swung a cross up to Benteke. The big Belgian was too strong for Clark and this time headed past Darlow.

1-0 Palace. Exactly what we deserved and it nearly got worse five minutes later as Benteke hit the woodwork once again.

At this point I didn’t know what the game plan was. We needed to change things. The formation wasn’t working and, right on cue, Willock and Almiron were stripped and ready to come on as Jones prepared a double change.

Before that, however, Callum Wilson drew us level!

A corner kick was flung into the box, Krath flicked on the loose ball and our number nine improvised brilliantly to fire an overhead kick into the top left corner to make it 1-1!

We didn’t really deserve it but it was the moment of quality we’d been missing all game and came at a time where Palace were threatening to run away with it.

Frustratingly, we reverted to type soon after and were on the back foot, with Vieira throwing on Zaha and Benteke spurning another huge chance soon after when slipped through on goal.

Just as we were edging closer to a point, it looked like the big man had won it for Palace. He climbed highest from a corner and headed past Darlow, sending the home crowd wild and every Toon fan in the country slumped back into their seat.

Fortunately, VAR spotted Marc Guehi pulling down Ciaran Clark just as the ball came into the box and the referee disallowed the goal after watching the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

We held out for the five minutes of stoppage time and secured the point, which could prove to be a precious one in the end – even if the performance and results elsewhere create fresh cause for concern.

Next up, a clash with Chelsea at St James’ Park fresh from their 7-0 win over Norwich today!

  1. We were shyte. No denying it. Need all Steves and 1 Graeme to leave. Jones was sacked when he was 23 of 24 teams in The Championship when Manager of Luton. I never believed his myth and said so on here. I dont care that Southgate chose him because Southgate will squander the best England squad since 1966.

I am trying not to be negative, but Jones just does not have the credentials to manage NUFC, even in the interim. At least he is not Bruce though and will probably not blame everybody and their cat, but himself.

  2. All Steves must leave and 1 Graeme.

That includes the 2 puppies Bruce brought with him plus Harper and Nickson.

  3. Message to Graeme:
Who are you?Who!Who!Who!Who!… meet the new Boss!, same as the old Boss!
    How about playing? :-
Darlow, Manquillo, Lewis, Schar, Lascelles, Willock, Almiron, Hayden,
    Murphy, Wilson and St Max.
A team that has a bit of pace about it and an attacking threat!
What do we get! More of the Bruce and the luckiest point ever today!
We need the points to stay up, for God’s sake try and win the bloody game!
Believe it or not Graeme this is you chance to show what your made of… and Wilson apart played S**T

  4. We were a lot better with Miggy and Willock on. Lost faith altogether with Fraser, he offers nothing.
    Krafth instead of Schar?
    Strange team selection Graeme.

  5. I know I wanted to see more of Fraser, but he is not a number 8. I think he is a straight swap for Ritchie who is also not a wingback. Play people in their correct positions. Did Jones pick this up from Bruce or has he always been that way?

I am assuming Willock didnt start because of nagging injuries. He needs to start, as does Miggy.

We cannot just sit back and give the opposition 75% possession. Not every team has a Benteke. He missed a sitter when he tried to side foot it past Darlow.

I dont expect anything from Chelsea, just hoping that we dont do a Norwich.

Today showed why Jones was Manager of Luton. I now think he actually did like and respect Bruce and was part of the problem. His comments indicate that.

I really dont want to get into criticising another manager even if he is only temporary, but Bruce would have been proud of that performance today AND team selection.

Weirdly, I think Donkey made a difference in the short period he was on,

      (Quote)

  6. geoegio: Fraser has said he wanted to try playing as a number 8 to get more playing time. We should have learned from the failed Joelinton experinment and have our players play where they have before we signed them. This means Donkey is not a number 9 and Fraser is not a number 8. Fraser was a passenger today, so just play Willock or ease Fraser in in his correct position.

  7. Well it didn’t look like much changed. We got hammered and was thankful for Palace’s lack of finishing skills.

Great goal by Wilson but I fear an absolutely battering next week against Chelsea.

I just hope they get a manager ASAP.

  8. That game has got me depressed because we were just as bad without Bruce as we were with him. Perhaps it is a Bruce hangover or that Jones was overhyped and is not as good as his acolytes think he is. His career so far would suggest that is the case.

Need new ideas and a new Manager fast.

Hoping we can persuade Overmars to come as DoF.

His wife should be used to this because he has been shyte at other big clubs where the fans have turned on him. Villa are a big club. The Mackems, whatever we think, are a big club. But he brings his wife into it in that interview with Luke Edwards. He is a coward and excuse maker.

Please let us get a new manager so I dont have to think about Graeme Jones either. He has no CV to manage NUFC.

  11. I’m not sure what people were expecting yesterday.

This was never going to be remove Bruce and all gets better over night – and it won’t happen when we bring a new manager & his coaches in either.

I’ve said it for months and been accused of making excuses for Bruce, but this was only a small part.

This is years of insufficient investment from Ashley – both in playing staff & managers & coaches.

A better manager and coaches may be able to get more from this group – but Jones isn’t the answer, and people who credited him for our turn in form last season & being some kind of anti Bruce messiah – madness.

It was never a case of get rid of Ashley and Bruce and all will be fixed. The takeover happening when it did might just have saved our season from certain relegation – but it hasn’t guaranteed our survival by any means. The new owners need to appreciate the urgency to get a DoF, manager and their coaches in NOW – not in a few weeks time.

The further we get cut a drift at the bottom, the more we turn out performances like yesterday, the more the people we might want will see the magnitude of the job ahead and be put off – making negotiations hard or just a straight no.
The further we get cut a drift, the more we put off the quality additions we will want to bring in in January – and without a manager in place, what will they be signing up to anyway????,

We need to stop basking in thought of what we might become – there is no time for that. The board need to make these appointments and ASAP.

  12. Palace was a watershed moment. We learned that Jones is not up to the task of even being an interim Manager and that we need someone in before the Brighton game. Chelsea is sort of a free hit so I am not worried about that unless we get beat 7 nil. But… the question I have now is if Graeme Jones is even a worthy coach? That was such a **** show yesterday that you have to question if he knows what he is doing. In terms of team selection. In terms of tactics. In terms of motivation.

I saw him interviewed and he was saying he liked being in the stands to watch the game. It is not FIFA21 FFS. You are there to make decisions and motivate the players.

I really dont want to go off on him, but we need a total re-do. A clear out. All Steves and 1 Graeme to go. Everybody associated with Bruce to go. I might spare Shola, but am in 2 minds about that even 🙂

If they had had Wilson and we had Benteke it would have been Palace 4 NUFC 0.

Eric – he didn’t bring his wife into his sacking. He said the whole toxic situation was having an impact on his family – and if you have a supporting and loving family, of course it would.

If I put myself in Bruce’s boots, would that situation impact my wife – yeah it definitely would. Would my son come out and speak up for me – well he’s only 12, but I’m absolutely certain as an adult he would. Why? because we are a unit and look out for each other.

People hammer Bruce, his son and his friends and pundits speaking up for him. I’m pleased for him personally because looking at the bigger picture, that’s what life is about – Newcastle manager is just a job.

Every manager in the Ashley era struggled – maybe only Pardew had some joy. But Bruce was not alone – and got the squad at the back end of his era when it was at its poorest. People talk about the £160m he got – it was putting a spoiler and go faster stripes on a 1 litre corsa ?.

Ashley was parasite, not Bruce – but Bruce was the face and voice the fans got & as a result, he got/gets the hammering & still Ashley doesn’t get it for leaving our club in such disarray.

I don’t get why you still hammer the bloke, or what you get out of it?!.

Anyway, I want the bindippers to win big. Mainly for the hurt it will put on Man U supporters as I have no love for Liverpool either. If Ole can get his act together it could be a good game, although I would prefer 5 nil to the dippers.

  15. I totally disagree with you Sharpy. Bruce is a charlatan and excuse maker. He has been that way for a long time. He might be nice with his pals but he shows his true face in interviews and when under pressure. He was the same at Villa and at The Mackems. And he did bring his wife into it, seeking sympathy. That is his MO. We have seen enough of it now (Villa, Mackems) to know what he does and how he acts.

Eric – of course we disagree. I don’t know how you can talk about someone so definitively when you don’t know the bloke.

I actively avoid sites like Eds because it is full of those keyboard warriors & nasty, bitter people that give us the bad name. I know every club has them – but I don’t have to associate or engage with them.

Bruce struggled to get the points & the mackems I work with also say that he did a decent job for 2 years then nose dived – I think that’s a fair reflection of his time he too.
But if people don’t see that Pep or Klopp would struggle with this group of players they aren’t seeing the big picture.

  20. Eric – you of obviously free to batter Bruce for as long as you like – I just don’t see what good it does you?!.

Also, I don’t think he is entirely responsible for our current plight.

Furthermore, I don’t see how it helps us moving forward. We should be focused on what the hell the new owners are playing at with the time it is taking to get our ducks in a row. Yes they may have only been in the club a few weeks, but they paid Ashley their deposit well over a year ago – so should have had a more of a plan than this!!.

Go for your life mate – but honestly there is enough material in his performances & result to go at without having to go after him as an individual.
It blew my mind that after every defeat he would come out and say we didn’t defend well enough or could have done more – then have a pop at fans for suggesting he was tactically weak or a poor manager ??‍♂️.

If someone is not good enough at their job, why in football do they get to keep it????.

Jones also came out with some Bruce-like lines after the match. Has he been taking lessons from “The Gaffer”.. I want Jones gone as well. I want them all out.

He is slow and cannot tackle, but he has a quick footballing brain and can pass. He is a liability if we have 25% possession like against Palace, but give him the ball and I think he would play better than he has most games for us.

Is that the least amount of possession we have ever had? Probably not. For some reason I have 18% against Chelsea stuck in my head. Could be wrong though.

It doesn’t look like they have much of a idea of who they want. In a ideal world the sporting director would be in place first but do we have the time? Chelsea is a free hit and I doubt a new manager would make a difference but after that it’s Brighton and Brentford. I think we could do with a new guy in by then to be honest.

      (Quote)

  57. Hope you dont get hit too hard Stuart. Are you vaccinated? I have been flying a bit and the planes and airports have been packed. That’s where I thought I would most likely get Covid but I did some research and where I went had low infection rates and I thought the vaccination would offer some protection. I did cancel a trip to Florida in Jan because rates spiked there. It cost me a few hundred for cancelled hotels, but better safe than sorry.

Stuart. You have the intrigue of who the DoF and Manager will be but I doubt the football will cheer you up. Chelsea next. If Kones can get a result out of that i will give him some credit. They are top but have not destroyed all teams like they did Norwich.

  58. I’m vaccinated, Eric yes. I felt ropey last week with usual flu symptoms but tested negative. Then yesterday lost my taste and tested positive but generally feel much better than I did last week. All bit strange. But we have to just get on with it.

  59. Ed’s Pensioners are talking about resting Wilson AND ASM for Chelsea. Are they mad. Wilson is our only goalscorer and ASM just came off his worst game of the season. We play 1 game a week, unlike Chelsea and there have already been 2 international breaks.

Chelsea may have slaughtered Norwich but they havent done that to every team they have played. Brentford were very unlucky to get beat 1 nil and I know it is chalk and cheese, but City beat them.

  61. Something I did see the other day was that 67% of PL players have been vaccinated. That is just madness. I also saw Klopp say all his players were vaccinated and that he didnt have to insist.

The US vaccination rate is still at about 60%. I dont understand all of these conspiracy theories and why people listen. Polio was irradicated by a vaccine. If you join the Army you have to get 14 vaccines, yes 14, before you are deployed.

Years ago I went to Egypt. The first thing I did after booking the trip was go to the Dr to see what vacs I needed. It was yellow feaver and one other. Do you think I would be mad enough to risk getting treated in an Egypian hospital? A car accident would be different but a vaccine is prevention.

  62. The Chronic did a survey with 25,000 repondents and their favourite for Manager is Fonseca. Have any of these people actually seen his teams play? Maybe Shaktar in the CL but is the Ukrainian league any good. I have no idea.

He next Managed Roma and did OK and Serie A is a big league, so that’s a plus.

I would go with Favre. I dont think that would rule out any of the candidates for DoF but we need a Manager yesterday and fear the DoF appointment will drag on. I have watched Favre’s Dortmund and they were pretty good. The other ex-Dortmund Managers have not done too badly either – Klopp and Tuchel.

The Palace game scared me. I was willing to trust Jones a little bit but 25% possession and the manner of the performance put me off. I think he has been vastly overhyped and I am not even sure if I would keep him as a coach. Still, having to deal with the remaining Steves might have dragged him down.
