George Caulkin drops Fonseca hint just as report names new ‘favourite’ for the NUFC job

Responding to a Newcastle fan wondering what the ‘hold up’ is with Paulo Fonseca, The Athletic’s George Caulkin has hinted that the former Roma boss may NOT actually be the new owners number one target.

The Portuguese coach is the current bookies favourite for the job, with some even claiming that a deal has been agreed in principle for him to take over on Tyneside, however it could be quite telling that the consortium are speaking with other candidates – not wrapping up a move for Fonseca.

Not only has Caulkin suggested that the 48-year-old may not be the ‘one they want’, it emerged last night from German outlet BILD that Lucien Favre is believed to be the ‘new favourite’ for the job.

They claim that the former Dortmund coach is considered the Saudi consortium’s top target, with Fonseca in second place, stating that a final decision looks set to be made next week.

Here’s George Caulkin’s intriguing response to a Newcastle fan wondering why Fonseca hasn’t got the job yet:

Caulkin also had this to say in a follow up tweet, suggesting the manager search looks set to go into next week:

I’m as sure as I can be nothing will happen this week. After that, we’ll have to wait and see.

Craig Hope said on Friday night that one of Emery, Martinez or Favre looked likely to emerge as a serious contender this week. If reports in Germany are to be believed, maybe the latter really has entered the mix!
