Ex-Mag tells NUFC to appoint 10/1 outsider as Steve Bruce's replacement in Sky Sports interview

Since leaving the club in 2015, Ryan Taylor has only had good things to say about Newcastle United, being one of those former players who really understood the club, us fans and what it means to wear that black and white jersey.

Speaking on Sky Sports this week, the former Mag has been discussing what he believes should happen next following Steve Bruce's exit.

When asked who he'd like to see us appoint, he named Steve Gerrard as someone he'd "love" to see our new owners target.

The Rangers boss is currently a 10/1 outsider to land the job at St James' Park and Taylor believes it could be a 'huge step' in the right direction for the 41-year-old, feeling he'd not only bring a 'big name' but offer good football, an understanding of the Premier League and the sort of passion NUFC fans crave.

Here's what Taylor told Sky Sports:

“I would 100% stick with an English manager, someone who knows the Premier League, knows the players, and someone with a big name.

“But I would love to see someone like Steven Gerrard in charge of Newcastle.

"It’s so passionate up there and with coming from this city, he’ll know what passion is all about.

“He plays football the right way, he knows who good players are, and I think he’s done an unbelievable job at Rangers.

“If he was linked with the club and the club were interested, then obviously it’s such a huge step for him with what they have planned for the future.”

Gerrard may be unproven at Premier League level from a managerial perspective, however it does feel like he would galvanize the players and connect with supporters.

He hasn't actually ruled himself out of the running - instead staying respectful to Steve Bruce while he remained in the job - yet many feel he has unfinished business at Rangers and is settled up in Scotland.
