New report claims Saudis now prepared to pay huge fee to bring ‘top target’ to NUFC

According to SPORT1, our new owners have made Unai Emery their top target to replace Steve Bruce.

Chief reporter Patrick Berger claims the Saudi consortium are keen to appoint the Villarreal in time for the upcoming international break and are prepared to pay the La Liga side a ‘huge fee’ to get him.

Supporters have been ramping up calls for an appointment to be made following our 3-0 defeat against Chelsea on Saturday – a result which left us six adrift from safety and stuck without a win 10 games into the season.

Paulo Fonseca appeared to be the clear front runner a week ago, but talk of his arrival has cooled amid rumours of several other candidates.

Now, SPORT1 is reporting that former Arsenal boss Emery – currently back in his home country – is the Saudis number one choice to kickstart a new era at St James’ Park.

The Spaniard led the Yellow Submarine to their first ever major trophy last season when he defeated Man Utd in the final of the Europa League.

With a track record of managing big clubs like the Gunners and PSG, he would certainly tick a lot of boxes for new owners who are keen to make a statement in the Premier League.

He also has a big point to prove in England – many feel he wasn’t given time to prove himself at the Emirates – and is known for organising defences and making his sides hard to bear; two things we are crying out for.

  1. Any of the big names being touted for the job (except Martinez) would be fine for the Toon but we must get the appointment BEFORE our next game in order to lift players and fans for what has become a must win game. Jones is not the man for the caretaker role and his selection v Chelsea was atrocious. Willock must play as must our number one keeper who at least tries to organise our hapless defence. Schar is a quality defender and Fernandez is our best centre back. Our current first choice centre backs are average Championship standard. Jones time at Luton tells us all we need to know about his ability.
