Emery leaves door open for NUFC move as Villarreal boss speaks after 2-0 win on Tuesday night

Unai Emery has left the door open to become the new NUFC manager following Villarreal’s 2-0 win against Young Boys in the Champions League.

News broke on Tuesday morning that the former Gunners boss is our new owner’s firm favourite to replace Steve Bruce, who was sacked a fortnight ago.

On the day of Villarreal’s crucial Champions League fixture, Toon fans stayed up patiently to see if the Spaniard would say anything that may hint towards an exit – and they weren’t disappointed.

This is what he said after his side’s win tonight:

“There has been an interest from Newcastle, that is all.

“No offer yet, which will have to be to me and to the club.

“There is nothing else.

“Before saying yes or no, I will talk to club.”

Emery was also asked about whether he would take charge of Villarreal’s La Liga fixture at home to Getafe on Sunday, while admitting he would “consult” any opportunity to make a sensational Premier League return.

“See me here on Sunday? (Home to Getafe)

“In principle, my intention is yes.”

“There is nothing else and if there were, I would consult it.

“I have not said ‘no’ to Newcastle.

“If this gets confirmed I will talk to Villarreal directors about it.

“I can’t add anything else.

“I am thankful to Villarreal.

“I have spoken to Fernando Roig (chairman) and told him that there is interest, but no offer yet.”
