Sky Sports: Two names now on Newcastle United’s radar after Unai Emery snub

So, Unai Emery won’t be arriving at Newcastle United anytime soon after confirming he’ll stay at Villarreal this lunchtime.

We’ve made a mess of this one and must now look elsewhere, which leads us to the latest update from Sky Sports‘ Keith Downie, who’s been reporting from outside St James’ Park this afternoon.

According to Sky’s North-East correspondent, two names in the frame are Eddie Howe and Roberto Martinez.

Downie claims that Howe would ‘take the job in a heartbeat’, while Martinez would need to be bought out of his contract at Belgium – having a release clause believed to be in the region of £2m.

It seems Paulo Fonseca is out of the running, with the consortium looking at others since interviewing the former Roma boss, while Lucien Favre is another option that appears to have gone quiet.

Watch his update for Sky Sports below:

With Jones expected to keep his job at the club, it’s interesting to hear that Howe ‘got on very well’ with the Gateshead-born coach during a brief spell together at Bournemouth.

As for Martinez, he knows our current interim manager as well as anyone in football, having worked alongside Jones during spells with Wigan, Everton and Belgium.

  1. PLEASE not Howe – yes he is an expert in relegation but we need an experienced MANAGER that’s going to get a grip of these players…

..not one that has bad blood with NUFC player’s

GET a Manager with his own coaching staff as Jones & Bruce’s mates are a waste of space

  2. The fans’ first choice was always Fonseca and we were buzzing awaiting his appointment-until this recent interview with the Vampire! #Fonseca/Toon! Black n White Army!

  3. Kk what the hell is your problem with Howe said this before he performed miracles at Bournemouth and why not give to a British manager instead of being obsessed with going abroad and if your not moaning about howe your moaning about the owners for God’s sake give them a chance we all know the takeover caught everyone out the speed of it so cut them some slack or are you one of these fans who thought we were going to run before we could crawl nevermind walk

  4. C’mon folks, we done want no stinkin retreads we need some fresh blood at St James’ we are the wealthiest and are acting as if we were still owned by Ashley, when we can afford the BEST not some retread’s
Or we could aways hire Big Sam again !
