Former favourite for NUFC job sends new message to Saudi owners via Sky Sports News

Paulo Fonseca appears to be very keen on the vacant job at Newcastle United.

In his latest update from outside St James’ Park, Keith Downie has revealed what a ‘source close’ to the former Roma boss has told Sky Sports this afternoon.

He claims that Fonseca’s held talks with the club two weeks ago but hasn’t heard a great deal from our new owners since – and has now invited them to reopen discussions now a move for Unai Emery has collapsed.

The 48-year-old was the bookies favourite for several days following Steve Bruce’s dismissal, however Sky Sports reckon the club look more likely to appoint either Eddie Howe or Roberto Martinez following today’s setback.

Watch what Keith Downie’s had to say below, as Fonseca makes one last push to land the job on Tyneside:

“He’s pretty much made it clear he’s interested in the position.

“A source close to him has told us in the last hour he’d be keen to speak to Newcastle United to reignite talks should they still be interested in his services.

“He’s someone the club looked at before they turned their attentions to Unai Emery and made him their number one target.

“It’ll be interesting to see if Newcastle do fancy turning their attentions back to Fonseca.”

This comes after Aston Villa are believed to have sounded out a potential move for the Portuguese coach earlier this week, with The Mail’s Craig Hope suggesting he could replace Dean Smith if results don’t improve.

Would you like to see us take a risk with Fonseca – who likes his sides to play out from the back and adopt an attacking approach at all times – or do you feel Howe or Martinez are more suitable options in our current predicament?

  1. Get rid of Penfold, its his fault, get someone in who can negotiate the correct way, we should sack him straight away.

  5. Fonsenca was always my first choice but being a pragmatic sort of person I recognised they were looking for some-one with Prem experience(hence Emery/Howe-remember we are normally linked with Pulis/Big Sam/Warnock/Hodgson etc so even Howe is an upgrade). Hope they go back to their original reasons for interviewing Fonseca & realise at this stage of the season you simply cannot prise top managers away just like that. Conte is the sort of manager who thinks football starts and ends in London so he would never have been a good fit up here.

You can’t have it both ways, Bruce’s win rate was criticised throughout his time here, despite him managing clubs in lower divisions and despite them being bigger clubs than Bournemouth they were all pretty much financially on their knees when Bruce was in charge, so you could argue the same !!

I don’t mind Howe but he isn’t the answer, he got homesick at Burnley and bottled taking on the job at Celtic, not sure how well he could handle the scrutiny of our fans !!

  8. David you could also argue that about few managers like Rodgers when he was at Swansea yet Liverpool took a chance on him all my argument about howe is he performed wonder’s at Bournemouth to keep them in the league that long wouldn’t try to compare him with Bruce because he was a dinosaur so let’s see what he can do
