Newcastle set to make January move for versatile PSG defender – Foot Mercato

Another new name has been linked with a January switch to Newcastle United today, with the French media tipping us to make a move for PSG’s Abdou Diallo.

Foot Mercato claim that we are showing a ‘keen interest’ in the 25-year-old defender – who can play at centre-back or as a left-back.

Diallo has been in and out of Mauricio Pochettino’s side so far this season, featuring just once in the Champions League and starting seven of their 13 league games.

The Senegalese international is contracted to the club until 2024 and is believed to be settled in Paris, meaning any January move won’t come cheap – especially when they paid £29m to sign him from Borussia Dortmund just over two years ago.

The report also states that Eddie Howe has asked our new owners to focus on defensive recruits ahead of the January window, which would be no real surprise given we have the second worst defence in the Premier League at present.

We lack left-footed defenders and need a centre-back able to offer some much needed mobility to an ageing back line, however a move for Diallo could prove difficult.

After all, will he really want to swap PSG for a potential relegation battle on Tyneside?
