Former Mag finds new club & another announces he’s retiring at the age of 38

It’s been an eventful few days for Andy Carroll and Jonas Gutierrez, with the former Newcastle United pair making very different moves in their footballing careers.

After being released by the club over the summer, Carroll has now signed for Championship side Reading.

The 32-year-old has penned an initial two-month contract with The Royals, keeping him at the Madejski Stadium until at least the middle of January to help cover for the long list of strikers currently out injured.

Carroll’s second spell at St James’ Park didn’t quite go to plan, with him scoring just once in 43 games for the club between 2019 and 2021.

As for Jonas Gutierrez, the Argentinian has has hung up his boots at the age of 38.

After racking up over 200 appearances in a black and white shirt, the he made his final appearance of his professional career on Monday, representing Club Almagro – the club he supported as a boy – in a 3-2 defeat to Ferro Carril Oeste.

Not only did he represent his country 22 times, he beat testicular cancer, helped us earn promotion back to the Premier League and scored a magical goal that helped us stay up in a 2-0 win over West Han at St James’ Park at the end of the 2014/15 season.

We’d like to wish Jonas a happy retirement and hope Carroll can prove himself at Reading over the coming months!
