Eddie Howe looks set to be boosted by the return of Paul Dummett as we head towards the hectic festive period.
As revealed by The Chronicle, the defender is now just a ‘few weeks’ away from being available for selection after an ongoing battle with a calf injury.
The 30-year-old hasn’t kicked a ball since pre-season, with his last appearance for the club coming in our 1-1 draw with Rotherham back in July.
He’s one of several ageing defenders at Newcastle United and is now approaching the final six months of his contract at the club, meaning the second half of the 2021/22 season could be make or break for the Academy product.
As we know, a fit Paul Dummett doesn’t often let us down, but his future may well hinge on his ability to stay injury free AND help shore up a leaky Newcastle defence in the coming months.
With Ciaran Clark struggling badly on the left side of a three man defence in recent weeks, the Geordie defender’s return could be a welcome boost between now and January – especially with so many tough games to come over the festive period!
