Newcastle hoping to complete £4m deal to sign Joelinton’s former teammate – Alan Nixon

According to Alan Nixon, Newcastle are hoping to sign Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch on a cut-price deal in January.

The Austrian international is due to be out of contract next summer, but is said to be attracting interest from both Newcastle and Roma.

Nixon – a senior writer at The Sun – claims that we believe he could be available for around £4m in the new year, with the Bundesliga side likely to cash in while they can.

Grillitsch is a 6ft 2′ defensive midfielder who can also operate as a centre-back. He’ll also know Joelinton very well from their time together at Hoffenheim, as they were often in the same starting 11 under former boss Juilan Nagelsmann.

This isn’t actually the first time we’ve been linked with the 26-year-old, with German outlet BILD crediting us with an interest just over 18 months ago.

He would tick a few boxes in terms of the positions he can play, his age and the fact he’s an experienced player available at a bargain fee, however competition from Jose Mourinho’s Roma could be a problem.

After all, would he really pick a relegation battle on Tyneside over competing for a top four finish in Serie A? Who knows.

One thing’s for sure – we need to sign players in January who are ready to give their all in a bid to keep this club in the Premier League.
