Newcastle now in talks to sign Uruguayan international as head scout holds meeting – Report

One name that’s been repeatedly linked with a move to Newcastle in recent months is Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old has been one of the rising stars at Benfica over the past 18 months, with him not only scoring 11 goals so far this season, but bagging three times across Champions League meetings with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

This morning, Portuguese outlet Mais Futebol report that we have stepped up our interest in the highly-rated Uruguayan.

They reveal that Steve Nickson – Newcastle United’s head of recruitment and chief scout – has held a meeting with Benfica’s president Rui Costa over a potential move for Nunez.

Mais Futebol claim that Costa made it clear he won’t be leaving for anything less than €50m (£42m), also stating that the club would only be willing to negotiate his sale next summer.

With 11 goals in 18 games this term, some impressive displays on the Champions League stage and an impressive 14 goals and 12 assists across 2020/21, the 6ft 1′ striker’s stock is rising.

One to watch next summer if we manage to stay up?
