Paul Merson has good & bad news for NUFC ahead of crucial 48 hours of Premier League football

Paul Merson reckons Newcastle will suffer a narrow defeat at Leicester on Sunday – but predicts five of our six relegation rivals will also slip up this weekend.

He believes 18th placed Burnley will lose at home to West Ham, also backing rock bottom Norwich to be well beaten against Man Utd.

On the flip side, he thinks Watford will pull clear from safety with a 2-1 win at Brentford tonight, but expects Southampton and Leeds to suffer defeats at Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.

Back to our trip to the King Power Stadium on Sunday, he feels we must attack a Leicester side who are “all over the place” after just one league win in their last six, yet still expects them to come away with a 2-1 win.

Here’s what he had to say when speaking to Sportskeeda:

Newcastle have got to highlight the importance of this game. At the start of the Premier League season, you’d think this would be a tough game for them. Now, you’re going to Leicester expecting to score at least one goal.

There’s no point playing for a draw – Newcastle need to have a go, score goals, and hope their defenders keep it tight. They’re in trouble at the moment and they need to make this game count. Leicester are all over the place at the moment but with Newcastle’s problems this season, Brendan Rodgers should be able to lead his team to a victory.

Prediction: Leicester City 2-1 Newcastle United

Here’s Merson’s other Premier League predictions:

  • Brentford 1-2 Watford
  • Norwich 1-3 Man Utd
  • Burnley 0-2 West Ham
  • Arsenal 2-0 Southampton
  • Chelsea 3-0 Leeds
  • Crystal Palace 2-1 Everton
  • Liverpool 3-1 Aston Villa
  • Man City 2-0 Wolves

This feels like a big weekend for us.

With Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd coming up after Sunday’s game, this feels like a huge opportunity to upset an out of form Leicester side who’ve not only been struck down by Covid but played in Italy just last night.

Elsewhere, we’ll have to hope Watford, Burnley and Norwich all lose, with us in no position to fall further behind based on the tough run of fixtures coming our way.

  1. Didnt Balloon Heed have a gambling addiction? And they ask him for betting predictions!

I think he also had a booze problem. So it would be like sticking him in a room with a bottle of Whiskey and saying you will be back in 2 hours. And by the way, Paul, I’ll just put this glass in front of you on the table.

  2. His head looks like a balloon when a 5 year old draws eyes, nose and mouth on it. That’s why his name should always be – Paul Merson’s Giant Balloon Heed!
