Newcastle hoping to sign Brentford star ahead of Everton & Leicester – The Guardian

According to The Guardian, Brentford’s towering 6’4” captain Pontus Jansson is a wanted man.

The report states that ourselves, Leicester and Everton are all showing interest in the 30-year-old central defender ahead of the January transfer window.

The Swedish international is having a tremendous season, consistently putting in commanding displays for the bees and it has not gone unnoticed by suitors – including Newcastle United. Intriguingly, his contract ends in the Summer and he could be available in January…for the right price, with Brentford expected to demand a ‘hefty fee.’

Newcastle have a definite need to shore up their defence and I think Jansson fits the bill as both a no-nonsense defender and importantly, a leader that can help organise the rest of the defence. He’s also not short of a goal or two and would be very useful at set pieces.

Brentford would no doubt be reluctant to sell their stalwart at the back and club captain; but in our favour, at 30 years old, the Swede may just be tempted by a ‘last hurrah’ in the form of a bumper pay deal and transfer package that only Newcastle could afford.

Also Brentford’s owners may well be persuaded to part with Jansson for the considerable financial benefit it would generate – especially when he could leave on a free next summer if he refuses to sign a new deal.

Here’s hoping this is a January deal that NUFC can secure. As for our league position, I’m pretty sure he’d be up for the fight!
