Back in June 2020, German outlet BILD reported that Wolfsburg hitman Wout Weghorst had been identified as our ‘top summer target.’
At the time, it was claimed that the Bundesliga side for holding out for £32m, with this coming after he bagged an impressive 20 goals in the 2019/20 season.
Fast forward 18 months and the same name has cropped up in the same paper, with BILD claiming he is now looking to leave in January and will be available for £17m – almost half what Wolfsburg were demanding in the summer of 2020.
In their latest piece on the 6ft 6′ striker, BILD claim that we remain interested in the 29-year-old and are considering making a move as our new owners aim to buy our way to Premier League safety.
Weghorst hasn’t been quite as prolific so far this season, scoring seven goals in 20 games for a Wolfsburg side currently 11th in the German top flight, however he did weigh in with an outstanding 25 goals and nine assists in all competitions last term.
Like fellow targets Trippier and Lingard, he is entering the senior years of his career, yet experience, quality and the ability to make an impact in the short-term is exactly what we need right now.
Here’s a few clips of him in action:
