Howe handed huge transfer boost with top target now ready to join Newcastle United – Report

The Mail are reporting that England international Kieran Trippier is now ready to join Newcastle United in January.

The piece, released late last night, claims that the 31-year-old looks set to quit Atletico Madrid next month to not only become our highest paid player but helps former boss Eddie Howe in our fight for survival.

It’s reported that we haven’t yet agreed a fee with the La Liga giants, however ‘sources close to Atletico’ believe they may end up accepting an offer considerably lower than the £25m asking price set last summer.

This is due to the fact Trippier is approaching the final six months of his contract and currently costing the club £130,000-per-week.

The Mail claim that his contract will be extended by a further year if he starts 20 game this season, however he’s currently on 12 starts and looks set to be sold in January – giving Atletico a chance to create space on the wage bill and secure a decent fee while they can.

Man Utd are believed to have been long-term admirers, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showing serious interest in the right-back over the summer, however his exit means a move to Old Trafford now looks unlikely.

If he’s keen to sign, wages aren’t a problem and Atletico are prepared to sell at a cut-price fee, it seems this one really might be happening!
