Technical director now ‘expected’ to join Newcastle United in the ‘coming weeks’ – Report

Yesterday, the likes of The Athletic, Sky Sports and The Telegraph all confirmed that Newcastle United had been given permission to hold talks with Dan Ashworth.

Less than 24 hours later, The Mail claim that the Brighton chief is ‘expected to join’ the club as our new technical director in the ‘coming weeks.’

The report also states that Brighton are already making contingency plans as a result, revealing that they have persuaded loan manager David Weir to remain. It’s believed he was ‘close’ to joining Everton over the weekend, but will now remain with the Seagulls as part of their ‘restructure’ now Ashworth appears to be on his way to Tyneside.

Here’s a snippet from the piece itself:

Dan Ashworth is expected to join Newcastle as technical director from Brighton in the coming weeks after being given permission to hold talks.

As a result, Brighton have persuaded loans manager David Weir to stay as part of their restructure after he came close to joining Everton at the weekend.

Have we finally landed that Director of Football we’ve been waiting for?

If so, Ashworth could be a real coup, with him not only doing great work within the England setup and almost landing a job at Man Utd after that, but playing a huge role in Brighton’s impressive progression in the Premier League.

Here’s him shaking hands with Eddie Howe just before our 1-1 draw with Brighton last month…
