Newcastle have loan bid rejected as Saudi consortium step up January search – The Athletic

Man City have rebuffed a loan bid from Newcastle United to sign Cole Palmer on loan next month.

The Athletic claim that we approached City chiefs about the possibility of taking the highly-rated 19-year-old for the rest of the season but the enquiry was swiftly knocked back.

Ferran Torres is expected to join Barcelona in January for £46million and it is thought that Palmer will see his game time increase at the Champions between now and the end of the campaign.

Pep Guardiola refused loan offers for Phil Foden during his breakthrough years despite loud calls from the English press to do so.

Instead, he gradually blooded Foden into the first-team, playing the England star sporadically – despite his clear talent – and City are now reaping the rewards.

Pep is likely to place Palmer on a similar path and ignore offers from other clubs to prise the youngster away on loan.

This perhaps points to the sort of loan signings we could target next month, with highly-rated talents struggling for game time at ‘big six’ sides likely to be looked at.
