Newcastle to hijack Lyon’s cut-price move for Zenit St Petersburg star – Report

Last month, Sky Sports confirmed that Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun was on Newcastle United’s radar ahead of the January transfer window.

Now, it looks like we might be stepping up our interest in the Iranian, with The Mail reporting that we are looking to pip Lyon to the 27-year-old.

The Ligue 1 side are believed to have all but agreed terms with Azmoun – who is out of contract at Zenit this summer – yet that move has been delayed as Lyon are unwilling to pay more than £3m.

As a result, The Mail’s Simon Jones claims that we have been in touch with Zenit in a bid to hijack his proposed move to France, with Eddie Howe in the market for another striker after losing Callum Wilson to a calf injury set to keep him out until February.

Azmoun has bagged 10 goals and four assists for the Russian giants this season, with two of those strikes coming in Champions League games against Juventus and Chelsea.

He’s scored 39 times in 60 appearances for Iran and was also prolific last term, finding the net 19 times to guide Zenit to the Premier Liga title.
