Player now keen to join Newcastle United as club launch new Sven Botman bid – The Athletic

Some big news has emerged from The Athletic in the last few moments, with chief reporter David Ornstein revealing that the club have submitted an improved offer for Lille’s Sven Botman.

Ornstein also states that the Dutchman is ‘keen’ to complete a move to St James’ Park, despite his current club’s reluctance to sell after qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

An initial bid of £30m was knocked back by the Ligue 1 side earlier this week, with them believed to be determined to keep a hold of the 21-year-old, however news of our second offer looks set to test their resolve even further.

Interestingly, The Athletic report that Lille’s financial situation means they may be forced into a sale if the price is right, increasing hopes that the two clubs could come to an agreement.

It’s claimed that £40m might be enough to prise Botman away from France, however it remains to be seen just how much we have offered in our second bid for the centre-back…or how Lille will respond after rejecting our first offer.

Here’s what Ornstein had to say just a few moments ago:

  1. Sounds a lot more promising.
Once the player wants to join it adds more pressure to sell.
Lille will need to sell early in this window so they have time to find a replacement.

It’s like Christmas every day in Geordieland.
