Newcastle 0-1 Cambridge: Al-Rumayyan watches on in FA Cup shocker at SJP

Well, that was an absolute disaster and one of the most humiliating results we’ve seen at St James’ Park for some time, with Newcastle United dumped out of the FA Cup by League One strugglers Cambridge United.

Eddie Howe actually selected a strong side, with him not only handing a debut to Kieran Trippier barely 24 hours after his £12m move from Atletico Madrid, but also naming Dubravka, Schar, Shelvey, Joelinton and Saint-Maximin is his starting 11.

Yet, despite creating several decent chances, we never really looked like finding a way past Cambridge’s Dimitar Mitov; who put in a superb display but also benefited from some pretty tame finishing.

We had 23 shots to their seven, 12 corners to their one and almost 60% possession, yet no one could say we truly deserved to win that game and progress through to the fourth round.

In the end it was Joe Ironside – the man who idolised Alan Shearer as a kid and grew up watching games at St James’ – who won it for the U’s, with him pouncing on a mistake from Dubravka to score the ony goal of the game.

This was our chance to entertain a packed out SJP, fly into the fourth round and build confidence ahead of next weekend’s must-win clash with Watford, yet Cambridge wanted it more than us; which is inexcusable given all of the above.

STARTING 11: Dubravka – Trippier, Krafth, Schar, Ritchie (c) – Shelvey, S Longstaff – Murphy, Joelinton, Fraser – Saint-Maximin.

SUBS: Gillespie, Dummett, Manquillo*, Hendrick, Willock*, Anderson, White, Almiron*.

There were several missing – Callum Wilson (calf), Isaac Hayden (knee), Jamal Lewis (hamstring) Federico Fernandez (thigh), plus unexplained absences for Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Dwight Gayle – however it was great to see Paul Dummett back on the bench for the first time this season, with U23 duo Elliot Anderson and Joe White also making the squad.

Trippier was stood out in the early stages, picking out a few lovely passes down the line, winning his duels and chasing down a ball brilliantly after a hopeful ball was pumped down the right-hand channel.

There was the odd good moment from us in the first half, as we created enough openings to have scored a couple of goals before the break, however a combination of feeble finishing and superb goalkeeping from Dimitar Mitov saw us go in at 0-0.

That said, we were very fortunate VAR didn’t award Cambridge a penalty on 35 minutes, with Matt Ritchie bringing down Harvey Knibbs after falling a sleep following a glancing header and showing a real lack of recovery pace as he attempted to catch up with the forward.

We got away with that one and also gifted the visitors a big chance on the 15-minute mark, as George Williams found himself free at the back post after a cleverly worked corner. It was awful marking, but thankfully his header was straight at Dubravka.

As for our chances, a lively Jacob Murphy forced Mitov into three good saves, with one coming from a clever cut back from Fraser, another being a curling shot across goal and the last being a thunderous strike that the Bulgarian somehow tipped onto the crossbar.

Spotted at St James’ Park was Newcastle United Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, sat alongside Amanda Staveley, Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Majed Al Sorour; the CEO of Golf Saudi. They’ll know we need another striker following another injury to Callum Wilson, but this was more proof that we really struggle to finish our dinner when our top scorer and No 9 is absent.

The second half kicked off and Jacob Murphy had the ball in the back of the net just five minutes after the restart. He got in behind after latching onto a long ball from Schar, shifted it into his left and finished brilliantly to finally beat Mitov, however the offside flag went up just as the winger was celebrating what he and most of St James’ Park thought was the opening goal!

Moments later, another goal went in…only this time it was at the other end.

After we failed to stop the cross or deal with the second ball, Dubravka let slip and Joe Ironside – the man who idolised Alan Shearer growing up and once watched games at St James’ – put Cambridge in front after firing home on the turn.

VAR checked for a possible offside in the build up. It was tight, but the goal was given, sending 5,000 Cambridge fans wild up in the gods.

Dubravka was limping badly as the game restarted, yet it wasn’t him who was hauled off, with Howe reacting immediately by throwing on Joe Willock and Miguel Almiron for the poor Sean Longstaff and unfortunate Jacob Murphy – who had actually been one of our better players!

We were huffing and puffing, throwing balls into the box and keeping Cambridge pinned back in their own half, but we couldn’t seem to break down the yellow wall in front of us, continuing to look toothless without that clinical striker up top. There seemed to be no plan B and a lack of intensity to our pay, with some players visibly out of ideas and/or low on confidence.

Aside from a blocked Krafth shot and Joelinton effort that was superbly saved by Mitov at the death, we never really looked like scoring and Cambridge held on for a famous win.

New owners. Same old Newcastle United in cup competitions!

Next up, an absolute must-win clash with Watford next Saturday.

  1. I fell asleep after staying up late and had this weird dream that had got beat by Cambridge in the cup. Another to go along with the Ronny Radford footage from all those years ago.

  2. And cannot believe that it took VAR 4 minutes to try and find a way for their offside goal to count. If Shelvey touched that it must’ve been with a fart. That said, if we cannot score against a team sitting 16th in league one we are doomed.

  3. We have a international goalkeeper scrambling around the ground on the floor like a village 3rd team goalie whilst Cambridge score.Abysmal!! I go back to the Milburn,Mitchell Robledon era when the team at least showed some fight.

  4. I can only hope that this has burst the bubble a bit. All this talk of new players coming in and the growing confidence we will stay up – today is a reminder that it will still take a lot of hard work.

It’s difficult because we found ourselves trying to break a team down – that’s usually us!!.

We tried hard and created chances, their keeper was excellent & we didn’t have the forward to score.

  5. I will try to take some positives from things that are really very negative:

    * the Chairman was there so he will know first had the job that needs to be done. He can sit down with Eddie and all of the rest of them and discuss a budget. First up, is get those centre halfs in.

    * Wilson confirmed out for 8 weeks. May as well be the season. We now know for certain we need 2 strikers, probably one on loan, because…

    * I saw on another blog that Gayle injured his hamstring in training. That usually means a minimum of 6 weeks with him. He has history.

    * from reports (I didnt see the game) Longstaff was bad again. Let Rafa have him and get a midfielder in.

So that’s a minimum of 2 CDs, a MFer, and 2 strikers we need in addition to Trippier. Problem is we might have to carry crocks in the squad hoping they will recover for the last few games – Wilson, Gayle, Fernandez.

      (Quote)

  6. Actually, this is the scenario that we all envisaged at the start of the season, except maybe with a few more points. What I mean is;

We all thought Wilson would get an injury. We all knew Dwight Gayle has dodgy hamstrings. It was obvious that our CDs are **** and Ritchie is not a fullback. Add in the fact that Longstaff has been **** for at least 2 years and we knew we would be left short handed at some point.

Ritchie and Longstaff should not play again this season. If we cannot shift them then they should not have squad numbers. I dont base this on today because I didnt see the game, I have had enough of them for at least so far this season and probably before that.

Does anybody remember Ritchie saying last year when he had a decent game that he had finally found his correct position as a left wing-back? Sounds like a bit of a joke now.

  7. I doubt this will put off any foreign players from joining us. Will they even know what the FA Cup is and what is the difference to the League Cup or whatever it is called this year? Let’s think of a similar type of club in Spain – Athletic Bilbao – would we notice if they got knocked out of the Copa del Rey by a lower league team?

I am not even sure if fans in England really care about the FA Cup anymore. Didnt Arsenal win it in like 3 of 4 recent seasons and they still sacked their Managers?

I am not trying to sugar coat this loss. I have thought this before today’s game. At least our fans wont be embarrasing themselves at Trafalgar Sq like the Mackems when they went to Wembley for that weird little trophy that I cant even remember the name of. Remember that slapper took a dump in the fountain 🙂

  8. I’ve read a few reports that some of the players just walked off at the end of the match – Keiran Trippier,
a player who has been in front of those fans 1 match was encouraging the players to applaud the fans & they ignored him and walked off.

They may well have been disappointed, but that is not acceptable to not acknowledge the 52k who turned out to watch them ultimately get beat off Cambridge.

  10. I think we have all supported NUFC for long enough to know that just when you think there is light at the end of the tunnel you find out it is a train hurtling towards you. I really do think that we will pull off some decent transfers, but I am not sure we have the time to get a striker in before Watford. By the end of Jan we should have a decent 1st team, on paper. But again, this is Newcastle United so who knows how they will perform.

I am not too upset by this loss today. There are far bigger fish to fry. Even with the players we are linked with we are still in a very precarious situation without a striker. I am about 50/50 on relegation and will be much more upbeat if we can beat Watford.

We need centre backs in before Leeds though!!!

      (Quote)

  11. They said Wilson will be out for 8 weeks. He saw a specialist on Friday and that was the diagnosis, but they havent told us what it is. It was a calf when he was first injured but his achilles was mentioned later. If the achilles is affected then I think it will be MINIMUM of 8 weeks.

NUFC are still not very good at telling us about injuries and progress. Nobody really knew what the hell was going on with Dummett. Then there is Fraser even. He supposedly had a hamstring problem which usually means 4-6 weeks, but he was playing today.

Then of course there is Covid. We have no clue who has that apart from it looks like Darlow got it again.

I am used to it by now but Howe seems a much more open person than Bruce so I was expecting maybe things would change. But, again. It is NUFC, always expect the worst and they will still disappoint you 🙂

  12. Watched the highlights and actually we were not too bad, just lacked a natural finisher when good chances presented themselves. When we did get a good shot on target their keeper was excellent, that last save in particular wouldn’t look out of place in the Premier league, it was world class.

We are desperate for a quality forward but assuming we get no one before Watford then I would put Murphy up front as he has a strong shot on him at least. Was puzzled he was subbed yesterday as looked our best player unless Eddie is trying to save him for Watford ?

Less effective second half, funny how the rest had a negative effect on the team similar to how Man utd looked sluggish after their 16 day enforced break against us.
I thought we were building momentum, maybe it dropped off because of the two postponed games.

What has happened to Dubs ? Looks all at sea at present, is it his injury still effecting him or has he lost faith in back line and now a nervous wreck. Keeper was one area I wasn’t concerned about, I am now. 🙁

      (Quote)

  13. Eddie has to somehow motivate this bunch of players, many of whom will surely know their days are numbered here. Not an easy task, still if I was one of the players I would want to play out my skin to either state a claim on my position in squad or secure a decent move away.
Either way there is no excuse to down tools or slacken off.

      (Quote)

  15. People on some blogs and youtube channels seem worried that we will not be able to shift some of our players. I think it wont really be a problem even for the likes of Ritchie, Hayden and Gayle. We could loan them out to The Championship and pay part of their wages. Alternatively we could partly pay up their contract and let their Agents find them new deals. They would be on less money but they would have got some dosh up front from NUFC.

A lot of bloggers and youtubers just dont think logically about NUFC saying we are stuck with these players because Ashley extended their deals. Sure, the Champioinship clubs cannot afford them but one way or another we can subsidize a move. How much can they really be on? Gayle was supposedly on 60k. The offer Man U put on the table for Pogba is supposedly 500k and we have more money then them now. One Paul Pogba pays for ALL our extended contracts and then some. So in the scheme of things I dont see this as much of an issue.

But NUFC fans on the internet want one more thing to worry and moan about even when it is almost irrelevant.

Ice – Trippier is right mate and if that results in dummies being spat then so be it. The way I feel about this team is they can all be replaced for me, I’m sick of the lot of them.

Max has been excellent for us and has without doubt kept us going – single handedly at times … BUT there is a Ben Arfa about him at times, whereby he will go for the Hollywood rather than picking the smart pass.

Max was one of the first down the tunnel yesterday – and I know he has a great relationship with the fans so I’m not going to slaughter the lad at all – but that’s no good & I’m sure once the disappointment of the result goes he will get that.

I think it’s more frustrating for Max that he is surrounded by players who simply aren’t good enough & he knows Wilson is out for 8 weeks.

I know Max was tweeting back about transfer rumours, maybe Howe needs to put an arm round and keep him focused.

  17. I don’t think it was a revelation to anyone that these players weren’t good enough – but some performances yesterday were quite shocking really.

Is it a case that we have a team of players who know their days are numbered?! Disheartened players don’t perform and I imagine we have a lot of disheartened players at the moment.

That said, we still created 20 odd chances and were hitting the target – it was a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing though.

Also, maybe it was the right result in front of our new chairman. If we comfortably beat them 4-0, would the urgency be there to get new players in.

I would want to know what happened with Rafa before throwing miney at Digne. LB is not our most urgent area. Manquillo can play there and Dummett and Lewis should be back soon. I thought Lewis was looking OK before injury and it would help a lot if ASM would pass him the ball occassionally.

The one player we dont want there is the one who has played most of the season – Ritchie. I dont care how much his defenders say he is a leader, he is too slow and has terrible positional sense.Oh, and cant tackle.

Gilly – I think he’s a better offensive full back than defensive – hence why Rafa hasn’t taken to him. I think there will be better options if we stay up anyway so won’t lose sleep ??‍♂️.

I think Woods is a good CF, but limited. He’d probably get us out of relegation & do us a job next season to get that mid table plus (hopefully) – but I’d be lying if I said it would be an inspirational signing like.

  24. I know everybody is dwelling on yesterday but we had one of our better games away at Watford and probably should have beaten them comfortably. They are in terrible form as well and had a bad loss at Leicester yesterday. We can get the good vibes back by signing a striker and beating Watford.

In the short term we need Willock to step up and need to see the back of Sean Longstaff. I would also like an update on Gayle and for ASM to pass more.

How hard can it be to tell ASM that he cannot beat the whole team every time he touches the ball and should lay it off now and again. I actually think that would help his game as the opposition now see him as one dimentional and just a dribbler. Bringing teammates into it gives the opposition something else to think about. If you have 1 or 2 men on you then give it a go, but 3 plus, you should look for a pass now and again.

This is on the managers as much as anybody. The game plan with all 3 this year seems to have been give it to ASM and let’s see what he can do. He needs a bit more discipline in his play as the other PL managers know our plan by now.

      (Quote)

  25. I don’t get what’s happened to Willock. He’s gone from being amazing last year on loan to total shi.te this season. Another Kenedy! He needs to sort himself out quickly.

  26. I think the Watford game is so big that we need a striker, midfielder and a centre half in by then. What I saw on Saturday I doubt we will score too many against PL sides. We also missed a boat load of chances against Man Utd let’s not forget.

If we have to pay over the odds then I’m afraid we must.

It could be because of lockdown and people having time on their hands but I think for some they see it as a money maker. You look at the True Geordie and I think youtube is what he does full-time now.

Most of the fans are passionate but some cannot speak and stutter and mumble through their rants. I tend to ignore those. I am not going to name them because I know who they are and I never click on them anymore.

Stu – I think certainly a CB (or 2) and a CF. Trouble is to get them in and registered in time, we’d need them having medicals tomorrow or Tuesday really – and we aren’t anywhere near that I can see.

To be honest, I’m bored to my b0ll0cks with all the transfer rumours now – I just want to club to get their finger out and start getting players in.

It’s worrying when you consider how long it took to act on Bruce, then get Howe in – and we STILL haven’t appointed a DoF. So they do nowt quick like – and nows the time we need them to!!!

  32. It is hard for me to be disappointed about not getting players such as Botman because I have never seen them play anyway. We do get the Champions League over here but unless Lille were playing one of the big boys such as Bayern or Barca they would not be shown. They are supposedly setting such a high price for Botman because they are through to the CL knockout stage.

Then there are the others. Lots in League Un. I never see that so dont know who they are.

We do get the Bundesliga as well but unless you are playing Bayern or Dortmund you are not on TV in the US. Again, any links to German players from lower teams I will not have seen. I bet it is the same in the UK but a lot act disappointed that we dont get a player they have never even seen.

My betting as that most NUFC fans commenting on these players are “youtube scouts”, just like Dennis Wise was who was panned by every NUFC fan for doing it.

Our position is such that it’s gonna be almost impossible to get anyone of note to come, in what is a difficult window to recruit in anyway.
Lille are doing their usual d icking about routine over Botman, we met their price so say but they decided to then up the price ! stuff that move on and go for another.
We are either being turned down by player or club or being asked for stupid money.

Pretty sure we are going down anyway so suggest we just ride the season out and recruit in the summer window when we know what type of player we actually require.
Pointless getting mugged off in this market and frankly sick of listening to SSN and talk sport saying we are rich but noone wants to come as they risk their career with us. Are they saying that about players linked with other bottom 4/5 clubs, no, thought not.
Too late for reinforcements now anyway, needed a CF for Watford as that’s a must win game and given none of ours seems capable of finishing and our back line is a sieve , I’d say we are pretty much out of luck.

But I think it’s become crystal clear that our first choices aren’t available this window, despite firm offers going in – I’m thinking mainly Botman here like. But also Ramsey doesn’t seem a straight forward one either.

First choice or not, Wood has 50 in 153 games – a 1 in 3 game CF with most at Burnley and in relegation scraps with few chances created.

As much as it doesn’t blow me away, I think it’s another very wise signing for where we are right now.

Equally, should the worst happen and we go down, I’m certain Wood is a CF who could get us right back up from the Championship.
