Newcastle activate £20m release clause: Player now on his way for medical – The Telegraph

Newcastle have activated Chris Wood’s £20million release clause and the Burnley striker will undergo a medical on Tyneside TONIGHT.

The Telegraph report that we have acted fast to get a striker through the door ahead of our crucial relegation six-pointer against Watford, with Wood set to arrive in the North-East in the coming hours and put pen to paper in the next 48 hours.

After our blank showing against Cambridge in the FA Cup, Toon fans have been calling for our new owners to sign a striker ahead of this weekend’s fixture.

Callum Wilson’s lengthy spell on the sidelines – another eight weeks according to Howe – has made our need for a striker a priority; and Wood’s arrival will ease the burden on a threadbare frontline.

He is Premier League proven and also weakens one of our main relegation rivals, scoring 50 goals in 153 appearances for the Clarets.

Some may wonder if it’s a panic buy, debating whether he fits into Eddie Howe’s style of play, however he is experienced and one of few EPL players who has got into double figures in each of the last four seasons.

  1. Not sure about this one, Wood was in top top form 2-3years ago he seem to be on the wain lately. Ivan Toney would have been my choice.
