✍️ Wood signs! – Full details, official pictures & first words from him & Eddie Howe

Newcastle United have announced the signing of Burnley striker Chris Wood.

The 30-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal at St James’ Park and will wear the number 20 shirt, becoming our second signing of the January transfer window after Kieran Tripper; who arrived last week in a £12m move from Atletico Madrid.

The fee is believed to be £25m after we activated a release clause in his Burnley contract and the striker is expected to go straight into Eddie Howe’s squad for Saturday’s crucial clash with Watford.

Wood has scored three times for Burnley this season, but has got into double figures in each of his last FOUR seasons for the Clarets.

The New Zealand skipper has bagged 50 goals in 153 Premier League appearances and found the net 27 times in 59 caps for his country, with him captaining the Kiwi’s since the age of 24.

Here’s the club confirmation, followed by what he and Eddie Howe told NUFC.co.uk after sealing the move…

Chris Wood:

“This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player.

“I have played at St. James’ Park a few times and it’s an amazing place, so to have the chance to represent this club with those incredible supporters behind me and my team-mates is very special.

“The club and manager have been first class during this process, and I really can’t wait to get onto the pitch and repay the faith they have in me, especially with a vital part of the season ahead of us.”

Eddie Howe:

“Chris is an important signing for us at a crucial time and I’m very pleased we have been able to move quickly and bring him here.

“He is a very dangerous attacking threat, has a physicality and character that I really like, and he has vast experience in the Premier League.

He will be a great fit for us.”

This is a smart move by the club, not only seeing us sign an experienced, proven Premier League striker, but weakening a huge relegation rival in the process.

Let’s hope he can hit the ground running, starting with Saturday’s crucial clash with Watford at St James’ Park.

Welcome to Tyneside, Chris Wood!

  1. Happy news from a NZ supporter, Chris has been getting rubbish service for the last year, give him the ball and he gets his fair share, defenders hate him.

    Cheers

  2. MK – the vast majority of NUFC fans see this as a good signing & appreciate what Wood can bring to our team. Yes it weakens Burnley for us too, but it’s more about what he brings to us.

I don’t know if this now makes you an NUFC fan or if you will just watch more of us because of Wood – but either way mate, welcome ??.
