Sky Sports: Player ‘very keen’ to join NUFC after £28m bid – He’s impressed by two things

Newcastle target Diego Carlos is ‘very interested’ in a move to Newcastle before the end of the January window, according to Sky Sports‘ European expert Andy Brassell.

News broke in the Telegraph on Wednesday that we had lodged a £28million offer for the Brazilian centre-back, which has yet to be given a response.

Our number one target had been Dutch U21 international Sven Botman but, like many other clubs this month, Lille are reportedly playing hardball.

Now, Sky Sports’ European football expert Andy Brassell claims Sevilla defender Carlos is interested in a move to Tyneside, being impressed by our persistence and the contract we’ve offered him.

The 28-year-old has developed into one of La Liga’s standout defenders in recent years following a switch from Nantes in 2019.

He helped guide Sevilla – who currently sit second in the league – to a Europa League triumph in his debut season and his aggressive, no-nonsense style appears tailor-made for the Premier League.

Carlos has a €60million buyout fee in his contract but, fear not Toon fans, as exaggerated release clauses are common practice in Spanish football and any deal would likely see Newcastle and Sevilla meet halfway.

  1. Now that’s what I like to see.

An honest player. He’s interested because of the contract we’ve offered him.
For him it’s all about the money. And why shouldn’t it be. I’m sure many of us have changed jobs because of a better package. I know I have.

I have no problem with this. One minute a player is kissing the badge the next he’s saying kiss my @$$ as he heads off to a bigger and better offer. It’s how we get players and it’s how we lose players.
