Benitez sacked – Ex-Mag set for caretaker role & two names in the frame to replace him at Everton

Former Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has been sacked by Everton.

The Spaniard lost NINE of his last 12 Premier League fixtures for the Toffees, with yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich clearly the final straw.

The Telegraph report that former Toon striker Duncan Ferguson will now take charge as their new caretaker manager, with Roberto Martinez – a reported target for Newcastle before Howe’s appointment – and Derby boss Wayne Rooney currently being considered for the role.

As for Benitez, he now joins a lengthy list of managerial casualties since Farhad Moshiri took charge at Goodison Park, as Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Marco Silva have now all been dismissed under his ownership.

This comes after former boss Carlo Ancelotti walked out on the club to join Real Madrid back in June, seeing them turn to Benitez after he left his role in China last year.

So, what next for Rafa?

  1. No surprise in that decision.

Seemed like an odd move to go to Everton in the first place

Always liked Benitez. He didnt get it right at nufc and he clearly struggled to buy into the owners approach and seemed to be distracted from the team in his all too public disputes with the previous owner

Hope he goes onto success elsewhere but really hope he’s not back here .. loads of precedent to show going back somewhere is a bad idea

  2. Let’s pray the Two names in the frame to replace him are HOWE and JONES

Give Rafa a contract until the end of the season = he knows how to Manage and get the best out of Rubbish

Plus he’ll have a couple of weeks to get GOOD player’s in….

…it seems Howe is getting championship quality in ALREADY – !!!????

It’s what we NEED NOW – the real owners have to override Amanda ASAP

  3. EVEN if it’s not Rafa – Howe has to be replaced NOW

The last few games have been a mess – and he’s deluded thinking we deserved anything from yesterday’s game – it was embarrassing!

  4. Trippier & Wood are NOT championship quality. Both are internationals. Are problems were created the moment we had to have 4 keepers in our 25-man squad. Previous year we included Atsu who had not been in a first team squad for 18 months. Our current problems lie at the feet of Ashley & Bruce and we have been “dead men” walking in defence with out aging back four. How is Howe responsible for that and the fact top class players will not come here whilst we are in the position we are in.

  5. Trippier is QUALITY…

…but saying players are good because that are Internationals – Hendrick & Fraser are…

…but both are on par with Wood – what a waste of a place that could / should have been for a Quality Striker

  6. Howe is a coach really good at training, but Rafa is a far better coach on the field, either in tactics or in experience. Combine the two will definitely superb in getting NUFC out of trouble. The problem now is that we do not have a good spine, and therefore we are loosing loads of goal especially our defenders are lack of pace when facing counter attacks…
