Ben Mee has emphatically confirmed he will not be joining Newcastle United any time soon, shutting down reports linking the Burnley skipper with a January move to St James’ Park.
Talking to The Athletic, the centre-back clearly stated his views on Newcastle’s reported interest, with his comments coming just a few days after former teammate Chris Wood swapped Turf Moor for Tyneside in a deal worth £25m.
Here’s what he had to say:
“I won’t be going anywhere for now.
“I saw some mad links to Newcastle; imagine going there and ruining the 10 years I’ve had here, that’s not the reputation I want.
“I want to keep this club in the Premier League and play for Burnley for a long time.”
Newcastle are desperate to bolster their defence and the firm ‘no go’ statement from Mee may be another blow to the club’s search for a top class central defender.
NUFC’s other targets, including Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly and Lille’s Sven Botman are also proving difficult to prize away from their clubs, although the club are said to be locked in talks with Sevilla for their star centre back Diego Carlos.
With a whopping goal difference of -23 so far this season, let’s hope we can secure at least one central defender before our crucial clash with Leeds United on Saturday.
