Former NUFC star joins Sven Botman at Lille in surprise deal – Official announcement video

Hatem Ben Arfa is on the move…again.

Following his release from Newcastle United seven years ago, Lille have today become the SIXTH club he’s played for since 2015.

This is also the fifth Ligue 1 side he’s signed for in that time, with him also having spells at Nice, PSG, Renns and Bordeaux.

Ben Arfa – who turns 35 in March – has joined Lille on a six-month deal, meaning he’ll be playing alongside Newcastle United target Sven Botman.

Considering he scored just twice for Bordeaux (his last club) and drifted out of their starting 11 towards the end of last season before being released, it’s a slight surprise to see him land a free transfer to Lille; a side set to face Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The mercurial talent has always been known for his incredible ability, having a Messi-like ability to beat his man and score stunning goals, however many have questioned his desire and effort levels, with some feeling he would’ve achieved so much more with the right mindset.

Nevertheless, we’d like to wish Hatem all the best in France – and hope he puts in a good word for Newcastle United should we revive our interest in Botman later on this month!
