According to new reports, Newcastle United have made an enquiry over a deal for Aston Villa left-back Matt Target.
This comes from former Sky Sports reporter Graeme Bailey, who reveals in his latest piece for 90min that we’ve contacted Villa over a potential January move
The 26-year-old was voted players Player of the Season last season, highlighting just how impressive he was over the 2020/21 campaign, however he’s now lost his place in Steven Gerrard’s starting 11.
This comes after the club beat Newcastle United to a £25m deal for Lucas Digne; who immediately came into the side at Targett’s expense for their 2-2 draw with Man Utd over the weekend.
90min believe that the former Southampton full-back ‘may be available’ this month after slipping down the pecking order, with him unlikely to settle for a place on the bench over the remainder of the season.
It may not be a good look signing Villa’s ‘back-up left-back’ who has just been replaced by someone we tried to sign in Digne, yet it seems clear based on his performances last season that Targett is good enough at this level and could improve us.
One to watch over the next week and a half?
Good player, but he’s no Paul Dummett

As a Villa fan, this is the perfect move for him. Could imagine there’d be an option to buy for £20m which would suit both sides.
He deserved to win player of the year but having Jack in front of him helped massively.
