Alan Shearer’s telling response to Jesse Lingard question & new transfer message to NUFC

Alan Shearer has given any move for Jesse Lingard his seal of approval, but warns that more signings and new defenders are ‘needed’ if we’re to beat the drop this season.

Responding to a Twitter post by BBC analyst @StatmanDave, asking if Lingard would be a good signing for Newcastle United, our former No 9 responded with an emphatic ‘YES.’

This comes after reports last night confirmed that we are in talks with Manchester United over a potential loan move for the midfielder, with the player said to be wary of committing to a permanent move to St James’ Park in our current position.

Lingard bagged an outstanding nine goals and five assists in 16 appearances for West Ham last season; the sort of form that could keep us in the Premier League if he is able to perform anything like that in a black and white shirt.

Here’s Shearer’s telling response to this latest transfer link:

As highlighted in the video above, only Burnley have a poorer XG (expected goals) than us this season – and they’ve played three games fewer! – highlighting the need for attacking improvements, despite most of the talk centering around defensive additions this month.

Shearer also had this to say when speaking to Newcastle World about our January business so far, believing there “needs to be more” after Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood if we are going to beat the drop:

“They’ve signed two players as we speak, Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

“We hope there’s going to be more and there needs to be more if Newcastle want to stay in the in the Premier League.

“We needed a forward and we need more defenders.

“Trippier is obviously a fantastic signing and hopefully Chris Wood will fire us the goals that we need to stay up, because it’s been a really, really tough season.”

  1. Any transfers will be too late for the Leeds game –
when you see how little PIF are offering for players,we shouldn’t be surprised that we’ve only signed two players.
