Lyon defender now on NUFC’s radar & Serie A duo keen to sign as club eye several deals – Report

The Sunday Times’ Duncan Castles claims that Lyon defender Jason Denayer is the latest player Newcastle United are looking at in our search for a couple of new centre-backs.

Diego Carlos is clearly the top target and could yet arrive if we can eventually agree a fee with Sevilla, however, Castles has revealed that we are also targeting the Belgian international – along with Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile – after Lille refused to sell Sven Botman.

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, he also claims that Atalanta duo Duvan Zapata and Robin Gosens are BOTH keen on January moves to St James’ Park following interest from the club.

Castles insists that, despite our lack of progress over the past week, we are working on ‘multiple deals’ at the same time, highlighted by the fact we are working on deals for two centre-backs, a striker (Zapata?) and a new left-back (Gosens?).

Here’s what he’s had to say on all of the above:

Duncan Castles on our search for a new centre-back:

“Newcastle are looking at multiple targets and working on multiple deals.

“They’ve been looking at European clubs.

“Amongst the other targets are Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile and Lyon’s Jason Denayer.”

Duncan Castles on Atalanta duo Duvan Zapata and Robin Gosens:

Newcastle transfer news: Atalanta respond to Duvan Zapata bid as Gosens eyes move | Football | Sport | Express.co.uk

“Newcastle are trying to get another striker alongside a centre-back.

“They’ve made an offer of over €30m for Duvan Zapata.

“The player is open to moving, so Newcastle are advancing in terms of getting players on board before making an offer.

“Zapata is asking for €5m, which is more than double his current wage at Atlanta; and he’s the highest paid player at the club.

“But my information is that he’s ready to move [to Newcastle]….as is his teammate Robin Gosens, a Germany left wing-back.

“Atalanta’s price for the player is over €40m.

“The player would come and is interested in coming to Newcastle.

“So Atalanta are waiting to see if they get acceptable offers for those two.”
