Leeds 0-1 Newcastle: Eddie Howe’s Mags hold on for mammoth win at Elland Road

GET INNNNN! That really does feel massive, in so many ways.

A Jonjo Shelvey free kick, some heroic defending and a huge effort from all involved saw us hang on to take all three points at Elland Road, handing Eddie Howe a much needed win that sends us just one point from safety!

We came into the game fearing the worst, with no new signings in this week, Leeds arriving on the back of an impressive 3-2 win at West Ham and ourselves rocked from that late collapse against Watford last weekend.

However, despite scraping through a few early scares and losing three players to injury in Joelinton, Dummett and Jamaal Lascelles, we dug deep and ran our socks off to survive everything they threw at us after a 75th minute free kick from Shelvey gave us a 1-0 lead.

The result takes us up to 15 points and above Watford, who look set to sack Claudio Ranieri after Friday night’s 3-0 defeat to Norwich.

Believe it or not, beat Everton at St James’ Park in two weeks time and we’ll be just one point behind the Toffees, with the Blues losing at home to Aston Villa earlier today and Brentford (23 points) also losing their fourth game in a row this afternoon at the hands of Wolves.

Eddie Howe has made just one change for this one, seeing Sean Longstaff replaced by Joe Willock in the middle of the park.

STARTING 11: Dubravka – Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Dummett – Shelvey, Willock, Joelinton – Fraser, Wood, Saint-Maximin.

SUBS: Darlow, Clark, Lewis, Manquillo, Hendrick, Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron, Gayle.

Schar leads way, Shelvey stays cool, Saint-Maximin up a level: Leeds 0-1 Newcastle player ratings - Chronicle Live

We had a decent half chance we didn’t make the most of early on, with Willock bursting into the box but failing to get a shot away while he had the chance. A moment which sums up his lack of confidence at present, perhaps?

It was a scrappy start, despite both teams playing at a decent intensity, and the first save either goalkeeper had to make was a huge one by Dubravka, who showed a strong hand and impressive reflexes to get a glove Daniel James’ close-range shot.

This was the start of a mini onslaught from Leeds, who began to get star man Raphinha into the game. He had the beating of Dummett and was unfortunate to find his cut-backs evade white shirts in the box.

We survived a period of sustained pressure from Leeds – who were getting Jack Harrison in behind Trippier far too often – but our first shot on target then arrived through Jonjo Shelvey.

Leeds only half cleared our corner, the midfielder saw a brilliant half-volley parried my Meslier. That was the start of us coming back into the game in the first half, however we suffered a blow minutes later.

After a decent period of possession and pressure, Joelinton went down holding his groin for the second time and was forced off. A real shame to see the Brazilian be unable to continue, especially when our midfield enforcer was being replaced by an out of sorts Sean Longstaff.

We ended the half on a high, but there was a clear lack of quality or decisiveness about our play in the final third. That had to improve in the second 45 if we wanted to win this.

The second half started with a host of misplaced passed that created a period of end-to-end action that seemed bound to end in a goal.

The stretched nature of the game then came with injuries, with Paul Dummett and Jamaal Lascelles – who was better today – forced off with muscle injuries.

Manquillo and Clark came on and the former was outstanding during his time on the pitch, winning his battles against Raphinha, snapping into challenges and winning the free kick that lead to that all important opener.

Watch it below here, with Jonjo Shelvey’s low curler being too hot the handle for Meslier:

A Leeds onslaught then followed, but this time we kept our heads, defended well and continued to carry a threat on the break, with Wood and Fraser firing wide before a huge change for Willock was well saved by Meslier.

Leeds resorted to high balls into the box after five minutes of added time were awarded, but the away fans were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief when each of those was met by a Newcastle head or Martin Dubravka; who didn’t put a foot wrong today.

A monumental win, brilliant celebrations in the away end, a huge air punch from Eddie Howe and hugs all round as the players made up for that late collapse last time out.

Next up, a big week in the transfer market (especially after three new injuries today) and a meeting with Everton at St James’ Park in two and a bit weeks time!

HOWAY THE LADS!

  1. Some funny/strange/monkey business going on:

Lewis – will not get a squad number and refused loan to Birmingham. Does that mean Eddie will freeze him out completely? He is injured though, and Brum is really beneath his ability.

Deli Alli – the deal to Everton is a FREE TRANSFER with 10 mil due after 20 games. That means not payable until next season. Up to 30 mil with add-ons. This is taking the p!ss out of the FFP rules. Is Masters or any other PL club going to say anything?

Lingard – the Manager said he could go, the board said he had to stay. Is there a better recipe for dressing room discord? Yes there is, have Ronaldo and Pogba in your squad. Plus the Greenwood thing is going to hurt them.

  2. So the team for Everton if Joelinton is fit, with Willock in there if he is not:

    Dubs

    Trips Lascelles Burn Targett

    Shelvey Bruno Joelinton

    Fraser Wood ASM

      (Quote)

  3. Assuming that Burn is announced in the next 45 mins, I would expect that too. I think that given that Bruno can do everything that Shelvey can I would expect Shelvey to be replaced by Willock or Almiron.

  4. There is no doubt that our defence has been strengthened, and our midfield has more dynamism and vision. Let’s hope we can keep Wood or Wilson on the park because we have no cover.. At the beginning of the window I sauid above all else I wanted Kamara, well Bruno is certainly in that class, a toch more of a progressive defensive midfielder. I also wanted Ekitike, so close.

      (Quote)

  5. We need to get rid of 5 to make way for news signings. Lewis and Clark have refused loans. Woodman and Hendrick have gone. That leaves 1 spot. I think it will be Hayden because I doubt he will be back for 2 months and he did a stupid interview.

The one I am shocked by is Lewis. I think Krafth should have gone out instead.

      (Quote)

  6. Too light up front, pray no long term injuries to ASM , Wood or Wilson relapse . We spent all that money and I still feel uneasy somehow.

      (Quote)

  7. Well it is what it is. I’m amazed they coxked up the forward situation but we are far stronger defensively and that should free up what forwards we so have to be a bit more creative. Do gets crossed we can just about survive.

Nothing left to do but get behind the team now. HWTL

      (Quote)

  8. Remember some previous Jan signings:

    Doumbia
Shefki Kuko (may have been later as free agent)
    Slimani, who was injured

      (Quote)

  9. You dont really need a 25 man squad if you only have a few long-term injuries. I reckon Haydon will not make the squad so that only leaves Wilson as LT injury. And after Everton, we only play on weekends so we dont really need to rotate. Eddie’s going have a lot of options unless he has a freak run of injuries like Ugly John Carver had when he took over.

      (Quote)

  10. I forgot about the postponed games so there will be midweek games against S’ton and Everton. However, there is another international break in March. Our lot should be fresh as daisies.

  11. I know I might sound like the stereo typical expectant toon fan all the pundits like to refer to – but I’m absolutely foaming they haven’t brought in a new forward.

We had 14 years of amateur transfer windows under Ashley – it might as well have been Charnley in the hot seat this one too.

Listen I get the players we got in are excellent – I’m really pleased with those ones.

But they know Wilson is a sick note, and Gayle has no future at the club – never gets a game. Other than Max we have no goals in that squad.

I get there’s nothing they can do about Ekitike not wanting to come – other than find that key piece of information out sooner really.

But to risk our premier league survival on a few million for Lingard – THATS EXACTLY WHAT ASHLEY WOULD HAVE DONE.

According to pundits we were huffed because Martial went with no loan fee (just wages paid) and we didn’t think that was fair … WHO CARES!!. Different player, different circumstances!!.
Lingard forced the issue by speaking to Rangnick & Man Utd lowered their initial asking price – and we STILL managed to mess it up.

We had players like Zapata on a hook, but left it too late.

Yet more evidence that these new owners do not have a real plan or the know how to get business done in this footballing world.

      (Quote)

  12. The idea that Lingard would come to us from Utd was never going to happen. He could of course buy out the last six months of his contract and become a free agent/

As to Zapata why buy when you have Ekitike? He changed his mind at the end when PSG and Borrusia showed interest.

I think people believe that signing players is a simple phone call or two, when in January particularly it isnt.

Yes I would feel a lot more comfortable with Ekitike and Lingard, but you can’t win them all. I was disappointed Ramsey chose Rangers over us.

      (Quote)

  13. I think if you’d have asked me on Sunday if we ended up with the five we have I’d have been happy. I think because of the new possibility of getting Etikite and Lingard it feels like a average window. However we have a much stronger first team than we did on the 1st January and we have strengthened our team/squad much more than Watford, Burnley, Norwich and even Everton and they are where we should be setting our sights on.

Let’s hope a better defence allows us to attack better. Think Bruno will be a key player providing he settles.

Does anybody know when Wilson is back? Someone said March but when?

      (Quote)

  14. I am just hoping Willock finds form again and Howe finds a way to get him on the pitch. He is the only player who can score a few from midfield. I dont think he became a bad player over night as some NUFC “fans” suggest. I have even seen some saying sell him.

The judgement of Wood after 2 games is also mental. He took the penalties at Burnley. If that foul on ASM at Leeds would have been rightly given, there is a good chance that Wood would have taken it in the absence of Wilson and would have scored. That would be 1 goal in 2. Before anyone says – aye but it’s a penalty. How many pens did Wilson get to add to his goal tally? Shearer, Lampard?

      (Quote)

  15. As I have said a few times, I think there is a good chance of Willock finding form if he has recovered from Covid and a foot injury. I think I am more worried that Joelinton will fall back into his old ways and the last 6 games or so will have been a mirage. I think we will manage with a midfield 3 of Shelvey, Bruno and Joelinton/Willock.

There is also the Shelvey inconsistency. He has played well under Howe for the most part. However, after watching him for so long you know if he will have a good game or not usually after about 20 mins. If he is having one of his off days, I would hook him at half time. I wonder if Eddie has the sense to do that?

      (Quote)

  16. Stuart: I looked on NUFC.com and they do not have a return date for Wilson. They are usually up on that sort of thing. They list all the injuries and the only other one is Hayden. I am not sure that he will get a squad place so that would be 1 injury in a 25-man squad, which is unheard of at NUFC.

      (Quote)

  17. I looked at our next 4 fixtures and they are not bad. We can pick up points there. I think a haul of 6 would see us out of the relegation zone.

    Everton H
    Villa H
    Wham A
    Brentford A

The one game most pundits would write off is West Ham. I am not so sure. They are currently 5th but I think that flatters them. Their squad is not that great and my prediction is they will be 7th at the end of the season. I think Moyes was at Everton for 11 years and got into Europe once. This WHam squad reminds me of his Everton days.

      (Quote)

  18. Moyes is a good manager when things are going well, but he turns into Dour Dave after a couple of bad games. I will never forget his body language at the Mackems. Looking at him, he had accepted defeat before a ball was kicked. He was overwhelmed at Man U as well and had a bit of the Dour Dave about him there also.

      (Quote)

  19. wellM/U led us well and truely up the garden path over Lingard even up to Monday morning said he could leave then pulled the plug they didnt want us to sign him stopped us looking elsewhere in the mean time, set of rat bags.
    dont sell to the toon

      (Quote)

  20. Sticking with West Ham because I am not writing that game off. This was their team against Leeds:

    Fabianski
    Coufal
    Dawson
    Cresswell
    Lanzini
    Rice
    Bowen
    Vlasic
    Antonio

I would say they are punching above their weight and stick with my 7th prediction. They have holes to fill and Moyes tried and failed to get Raphinia, Phillips and Darwin Nunez in the window.

I am not sure they are much better than us on paper. That may sound like madness, but about half their side would not start for us.

      (Quote)

  21. I am not looking past Everton and Villa, I am just thinking we have a chance to pick up a few points in the next month.

      (Quote)

  22. Would be just like Deli Ali to score against us having not really been arsed to play for 3 years 🙄

Also there is covid in the NZ camp, so Wood could yet be infected.

      (Quote)

  23. Just heard about wood. That would a kick in the nuts wouldn’t it? Still fuming we didn’t just accept manure fleecing us and get Lingard early. Plenty of chances in the future for payback. But hey ho, it is what it is now.

      (Quote)

  24. Stuart79:
Kim if that’s the case he should come back to the UK and we should demand that.

They cancelled the game. As long as he is negative, he can come back to the UK. If positive, he needs to isolate in Dubai for 10 days.

Looks like Covid is done in Chicago. Cases back to before Omnicron and hospitalizations and deaths like a normal flu season. I had to show my vax card in a couple of bars last week, but no big deal.

      (Quote)

  25. I have a simple theory on the Bruno transfer. His Agent and a so-called super-Agent who is involved, called Kia Joorabchian, are doing us a favour expecting some quid pro quo with their other clients in the future. After all, we are the richest club in the world and will even be splashing the cash in the summer if we stay up.

      (Quote)

  26. BTW. If we stay up, I expect an absolute minimum of 150 million to be spent in the summer. The rules for FFP extend back 3 years and out 3 years, so that is easily doable. We are also now paying in instalments, unlike with Fatty who thought he could get a deal by paying cash.

Lastly, we will have new sponsors and vastly increased commercial revenue. The PL and the cartel cannot stop this. The amount all depends on if we stay up. I expect 50 mil a year from Aramco or similar if we stay up.

FFP is a joke anyway as was seen when City were taken to arbitration and won.

      (Quote)

  27. On a 6 month deal, why not … certainly be better than Gayle.

I don’t understand what’s happened with Lewis that he could lose his squad place altogether mind.

    Potential return of 5th March.
Should have Ritchie, Joe and Dummett back for next game.

Hayden 19th March. Fede couple of weeks.

      (Quote)

  29. What spots are up for grabs at NUFC? I think there are only 3, although there will be some rotation like at leftback.

CB – Lascelles, if he has one more bad game, I think we will see Dummett or Schar alongside Burn.

MF – Joelinton, I think Howe likes Shelvey. If Big Joe loses form, then there is a ready replacement in Willock.

RW – Fraser. Again, there are ready replacements in Miggy and Murphy, or Eddie could even shift to 4-4-2 when Wilson is fit.

When we consider predicting the teams going forward, I think the rest are set and only these will change barring injury or catastrophic loss of form.

      (Quote)

  30. I also think that Tuesday’s team is the easiest to predict of the season as long as Joelinton is fit:

    Dubs

    Trips Lascelle Burn Targett

    Shelvey Bruno Joelinton

    Fraser Wood ASM

      (Quote)

  31. Of course, there will be calls for Schar and Manquillo, but this is recency bias because they played well at Leeds. C’mon now, Schar has had his bad games this season, just like Lascelles so dont suddenly think he is Paolo Maldini. And Manquilo has played a half of football all year at left back. But you know there will be cries for their inclusion from the Twitterati.

      (Quote)

  32. Lascelles cant head the ball as well as Burn, and that’s his only redeeming feature. Will be Schar

Brono G has the same attacking skill set as Shelvey but with dyanmism, Can see Shelvey dropped. Jo has the attacking dynamism to compliment Bruno with willock in form or Miggy.

Fraser I agree with Murphy as back up.

      (Quote)

  33. Prem: I am not saying that is the team I would pick because I think Lascelles has been our worst player this season. I just think this is how Eddie will start out.

I would really like to find a way to get Willock in the team as I think he is most likely to score from midfield. I just dont think it will happen against Everton and Shelvey will have to have a real stinker to be dropped.

      (Quote)

  34. I agree if Willock is back on form then I would play 4-1-4-1 with
Dub; Targett, Burn, Schar, Trippier; Bruno; ASM, Willock, Joelinton, Fraser; Wood
Without Willock I would play Miggy because he is more dynamic and whilst his end product is poor he moves thing forward and presses better than Shelvey.

      (Quote)

  35. I have always gone back and forth on Shelvey. I think that his inconsistency has always led me to have inconsistent thoughts about whether he should be in the team. There is no doubt he has talent though. He just doesnt have the legs, meaning he is slow. He is a quick thinker though. You need to have somebody to do his running and we might have that now between Bruno, Joelinton and Willock. It could be a Bellamy/Shearer, well, maybe not 🙂 🙂 🙂

You really have to make up your mind about what Jonjo can and cannot do. He cannot tackle! He cannot take a free kick or corner (that one at Leeds was lucky). He cannot beat his man or dribble. But he can pick a pass. He can transition and hit an instinctive ball. If you give him no time, he will pick the right play. Give him time, and he will overthink it.

If you are going to play Jonjo, you have to play to his strengths and that is not in an 8 fcn 1 – 1 formation. He may as well be on the golf course if that’s what you play Brucie!

Good luck to West Brom. I thought they might have been done with NUFC has-beens after Pards 🙂

      (Quote)

  36. The weakest links in the chain are Jonjo and Lascelles and they will be gone in the summer if we stay up.

Jonjo because of his slowness and inconsistency.

Lascelles because he makes mistakes and is scared of the ball.

      (Quote)

  37. The team is not the problem, the bench is.
Darlow, Dummett, Lacelles, Manquillo, Shelvey, Murphy, Gayle
with Hayden and Longstaff as additional options

      (Quote)

  38. The Chronicle are saying that NUFC players not included in the squad have a “left field outcome”.

Do you know where the term “left field” is supposed to come from? Chicago.

When the Chicago Cubs baseball team first started up in the late 18 hundreds they played in a park next to a loony bin. It was situated behind the players in left field. The story is that they would hear the screams of the insane and the lobotomies as they played baseball in left field.

It became “outta left field” because it was crazy and you didnt want to be there.

      (Quote)

  39. I fear Everton will be a bigger challenge than we expected. They have some good players when fit and all them will have a point to make to the new boss. Same thing coming up from Villa.

Their good players are not fit though and the new guys havent played this season – VDB. Alli has something to prove, but also nothing to lose because he can sit on his giant wallet whether he is at Spurs or Everton. Calvert-Lewin has only played like 90 mins.

    That is an unbalanced squad.

You are getting a cabbage headed, excuse maker. Bent nose, fat fck. And 2 Steves thrown in as well. The only good news is that you are not in the PL because then you would have to listen to how good he is from Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy after your latest loss playing the 8-1-1 system.

    PLEASE HIRE GRAEME JONES.

You didnt learn your lesson from Pards 🙂

  51. Aye, we have the band back together. What do you say Steves? Fat Ash just gave you hundreds of thousands apiece and we can now con another owner. I can also bring Wor Alex along as he was on minimum wage at the BBC podcast. We can double that and he can do 2 pie runs a day.

What? He should be part of the coaching staff? Nah. I recruited him at Hull as well when I was there anaaarl.

Monday – Melton Mowbray. Tuesday – Fed Ex a few Greggs’ Steak Bakes, Wednesday and Thursday, days off, Friday, double – Greggs and Melton Mowbray. Weekend, something called a football game. GOT THAT ALEX?

Alex: But Father, you will be sacked in 6 months just like Pards.

Steve: Shush, and put this giant pile of cash under your mattress.

  55. I was livid at the close of the window. We haven’t strengthened enough up front imo & it could cost us – it could still cost us.

But, having calmed down a bit I now see it as a 4 team battle for 3 relegation spots – Burnley, Newcastle, Watford & Norwich. I see the rest pulling safe personally.

Forget the 40 point mark or points total – we just need to get more points than those 3 teams – and with our squad now, I think we could – I think it could go the distance, but I fancy our chances as much as any of those 3 …. BUT I think a good restart is crucial really.

Leeds could be a huge 3 points, but if we get nothing from Everton, they probably won’t be – even a draw against Everton, just to keep some points coming in.

The defence and getting them gelled is key imo. The quicker we can shore up at the back the better chance we have ??.

      (Quote)

  56. I’ve been looking at our fixtures. Am I right that we only have 7 home games left, Everton, Villa, Brighton, Palace , Wolves, Liverpool and Arsenal. Even if we win the first 5 we still only have 30 points. That means a point a game from 8 of the ten away games, again the other two Chelsea and City I’m assuming the worst.

      (Quote)

  57. Stats are not always facts. I see that Olly has done an article where some stato said Fraser is one of the worst players in the PL. It doesnt say he was injured and coming back from injury. Or that he was pressing. Sometimes, you dont need to put a tackle in to influence the game but that is all that counts for the currently in-vogue stat-Meisters.

I have watched the games, and Fraser is currently more effective than Miggy. Not hard!!! As Miggy has had no end product for us all year. Zero assists and zero goals. In his case, the stats reflect what he has been doing on the pitch. His stats are ALMOST as bad as his play.

      (Quote)

  58. Our weak links have been:

    Clark – obviously!

    Captain Calamity – obviously.

    Darlow/Woodman.

    Longstaff.

    Ritchie

Joelinton up front, not in midfield.

    Miggy

WE HAVE REPLACED THEM ALL, some internally and others by playing in a different position (Joelinton)

      (Quote)

  59. If we go down, I will blame Lascelles for the rest of my life for that 1/2 inch jump to let a 5-6 inch Watford player score behind him. It was about the easiest fcn clearance a centre back could make and he failed. I would have put him in the reserves just for that!!!

    Titus Bramble in disguise!
