NUFC set to target Premier League left-back if £16m move for Bakker breaks down – Report

It was widely reported over the weekend that Newcastle United were closing in on a deal for Dutch left-back, Mitchel Bakker.

The Telegraph claimed that we’d ‘agreed a deal in principle’ with Bayern Leverkusen and were now set to discuss personal terms with the 21-year-old.

Today, The Mail have revealed the back-up option we have in mind should talks with Bakker break down.

They report that Aston Villa’s Matt Targett could be the man we turn to should the former PSG wing-back opt to remain in Germany.

Despite being named player’s player of the season at Villa Park last season, Targett has just lost his place in Steven Gerrard’s starting 11 after the £25m arrival of Lucas Digne.

As a result, he won’t want to be warming the bench for the remainder of the season and could well push for a move over the final week of the transfer window.

90min actually reported last week that we’d lodged an enquiry over the 26-year-old’s availability, which makes sense given he is Premier League proven and likely to want out.

Whether Gerrard would let him leave is another question, however, with him deemed a key player at Aston Villa not so long ago.
