Journalist claims NUFC have just launched ‘surprise’ move for Brighton defender

Newcastle United have launched a ‘surprise late inquiry’ for Brighton centre-back Adam Webster, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

He claims that Webster ticks a lot of boxes for Eddie Howe, being the right age at 27 and being proven in the Premier League – but warns that the Seagulls are likely to demand a big fee.

The 6ft 3′ defender has been outstanding under Graham Potter this season, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher recently claiming that there isn’t an English centre-back out there who is a better passer with both feet.

This came after his man of the match display in Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea last Tuesday, which saw the former Bristol City star keep Romelu Lukaku quiet, carry the ball out of defence impressively and score the equaliser via a thumping header.

These claims from Nixon – the journalist who called moves to Tyneside for Federico Fernandez and Rodrigo Vilca – suggest we are looking to move on from Diego Carlos ASAP, as Sky Sports revealed earlier today that we have decided to walk away from that deal after seeing Sevilla move the goalposts on several occasions.

Webster could be a brilliant signing, but I fully expect Brighton to demand huge money, making a late January move to Tyneside seem highly unlikely.

They paid £20m to bring him to The Amex back in 2019 and may well want at least double that now…
