Saudi consortium set to appoint Majed Al Sorour as ambitious plans take shape – The Times

The new owners of Newcastle United look set to appoint Majed Al Sorour, the chief executive of the Saudi Golf Federation, to the club’s board.

This comes from The Times, who report that the Saudi-based CEO will become a fourth director at Newcastle United, alongside Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Amanda Staveley and Jamie Reuben, if and when his appointment is approved by the Premier League.

Al Sorour may be a familiar face to eagle-eyed Newcastle fans, with him spotted sitting alongside our new owners at St James’ Park in the first game following the takeover – a home clash with Spurs – and for our FA Cup defeat to Cambridge earlier this month.

The same piece also reveals that our Saudi-backed owners have huge plans to make Newcastle United the ‘focal points’ of a global sports and football portfolio, with the PIF planning to follow the ‘multi-club’ approach taken by Manchester City over the past decade.

With this in mind, it’s reported that the arrival of Saudi golf chief, Majed Al Sorour, will only aid these lofty ambitions, as some expect his presence on the NUFC board to boost our hopes of lucrative sponsorship deals.

Here’s a snippet from The Times’ intriguing new piece on all things NUFC:

The Saudi Arabian owners of Newcastle United have ambitions to make the club the focal point of a global sports and football portfolio.

Saudi Arabia’s immensely wealthy Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns 80 per cent of Newcastle, wants to mirror the multi-club approach taken by Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi owners, but is also considering investing in other sports too.

That ambition will be given impetus by a move by Newcastle’s owners to appoint Majed Al Sorour, the chief executive of the Saudi Golf Federation who has led Saudi Arabia’s drive to bring the world’s top golfers to play in the Gulf kingdom, as a new director of the club.

It is understood the appointment has been passed to the Premier League for approval.
