Newcastle’s £8m bid rejected by Brighton & late move to sign Southampton star fails – Reports

The Athletic have confirmed that Newcastle United have had an initial bid rejected by Brighton for versatile defender Dan Burn.

The same report claims that we’re also interested in Seagulls pair Yves Bissouma and Adam Webster, stating both have been discussed in transfer meetings this month.

As for Burn, they say it’s ‘unclear’ if we will come back with another bid for the 6ft 7′ Geordie – who was born in Blyth and released by NUFC as an 11-year-old – while The Mail’s Craig Hope has revealed that our opening offer amounted to £8m.

Elsewhere, Tom Barclay – The Sun’s South Coast correspondent – has had it confirmed that we’ve tried and failed to sign Southampton centre-back Mohammed Salisu this month.

The impressive Ghanaian was linked with a move to Tyneside earlier this week, being described as a possible alternative to Diego Carlos, however it seems we had a recent approach knocked back, with the Saints ‘not interested’ in selling the in-form 22-year-old.

Here’s updates on both Salisu and Burn from Barclay and Hope:

Salisu would be a brilliant signing, being the sort of aggressive and athletic centre-back we currently lack, however it seems this one might have to wait until the summer?

As for Burn, we’ll have to hope he pushes for a move back to his boyhood club, with Brighton having no reason to sell while he’s performing so well in Lewis Dunk’s absence.

Either way, it seems we have work to do in our never-ending search for a couple of new centre-backs!
