Steve Bruce now the new favourite for Championship job after surprise sacking on Wednesday

Former Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has emerged as the leading contender to take over at West Brom, with him suddenly priced at 1/8 by Sky Bet.

This comes after the Baggies sacked head coach Valerien Ismael after just seven months in charge earlier today, leaving them on the lookout for a new manager once again.

The Mail claim that an out of work Steve Bruce is an early contender along with Blackburn’s Tony Mowbray – not that he seems likely given Rovers are currently 2nd in the table.

Any move to The Hawthorns would see Bruce link up with former NUFC striker Andy Carroll, who joined on a free transfer just a few days ago.

Bruce has been out of work since he was sacked by our news owners last October and has had several stints in the Championship, managing the likes of Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull.

Having gone 10 games unbeaten at the beginning of the 2021/22, West Brom have gone on to lose eight of the 19 games that followed, winning just six times in that period.

Only seven Championship teams have picked up fewer points over their last 19 matches(23), leaving them eight points away from the automatic play-off spots.
