Allan Saint-Maximin’s future addressed by Eddie Howe – Hints this could be ‘key’ to keep him

Eddie Howe has played down fears that Allan Saint-Maximin could have one eye on a big money move away from Newcastle United this summer.

Speaking to The Times last month, the Frenchman admitted that he may be forced to consider his future if the club couldn’t help him achieve his ‘dreams’ – to play for the France national team, compete in the Champions League and even win Ballon D’Or one day!

However, Howe insists that he’s seen ‘no indication’ that his head is anywhere others than on Tyneside, feeling he’s fully committed and someone who adores playing in front of fans who idolise him at St James’ Park.

Here’s what he told the press today when asked about the 24-year-old’s future, hinting that his relationship with supporters could be ‘key’ to keeping him:

“I’ve seen no indication from the player that his head’s anywhere other than Newcastle and making sure he’s committed to us….

“I see a player that loves playing at St James’ Park in front of supporters, is idolised by them.

“That relationship is key to Maxi.

“100% he can get into the France squad as a Newcastle player.

He’s got everything in his locker.

Howe then discussed his work off the training pitch and endeavour to always improve, believing consistency is the only thing he’s missing:

“I have to say he’s always wanting to stay out afterwards and improve, whether it’s his shooting or his crossing, and he’s always working on things so we can’t compliment him enough for that.

“His endeavour, work rate and attitude is very good.

“If he hits that consistently, what a player he could be.

“His cross for the Ryan Fraser goal when there was no space to get that ball into the box was incredible.

“There’s no doubt he’s got the talent to do whatever he wants to do, but finding that on a consistent basis is the challenge for any player of his type.”

Let’s hope we can kick on as a club at a pace that allows us to keep Allan Saint-Maximin – an incredible talent who will hopefully be able to achieve his dreams in a black and white shirt!
