Lothar Matthaus has revealed that Niklas Sule did receive an offer to sign for Newcastle United on a free transfer this summer.
The Bayern Munich centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season and had been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park since the Saudi takeover went through.
However, it’s been confirmed over the past week that he’s now signed a pre-contract agreement at Borussia Dortmund, with Matthaus – a German legend and Bayern representative – revealing that Newcastle were on of two offers from England that the 6ft 4′ defender turned down.
He insists that Sule could’ve ‘earned a lot’ on Tyneside, but preferred a move to Dortmund, claiming the 26-year-old wasn’t motivated by money:
Here’s what he had to told SPORT1 when asked about the offers that came German international’s way:
“Niklas Süle had two offers from England – one of them from Newcastle, where he could have earned a lot but he wanted Borussia Dortmund.
“He didn’t feel supported by FC Bayern. He was left out in the cold.
“Niklas always gave everything for this club. He is not a greedy player.
“It’s different with Niklas, he wouldn’t have stayed for more money, either.
“He lacked the warmth and appreciation that every person needs from their employer.”
