Newcastle eyeing summer move for Liverpool star if relegation is avoided – The Athletic

The Athletic report that Newcastle United are eyeing up a summer move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, should we beat the drop.

The 24-year-old formed a formidable partnership with Virgil Van Dijk not so long ago, however he’s struggled for game time since returning from a serious knee injury.

He made his first Premier League start for 15 months in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Norwich – where he played at right-back – and may be considering his options this summer after being stuck on the bench for the majority of 2021/22.

Writing for The Athletic today, their Liverpool correspondent – James Pearce – claims that both Newcastle United and Aston Villa are expected to be ‘near the front of the queue’ to sign the centre-back.

With two years remaining on his current deal, he reports that the England international is approaching a ‘crossroads’ in his career, feeling he can not afford another season where he’s largely watching on from the sidelines.

Other Premier League clubs are expected to show interest should Liverpool decide to cash in, but this definitely feels like a signing that would appeal to Eddie Howe, being a proven player with pace, quality in possession and high potential.

Another name to watch out for this summer, providing we stay up!

  1. More stupid gossip that made no sense. If Newcastle avoided relegation, with all the wealth they have why would they try to buy someone who is only playing reserve in Liverpool? Everyday we see stupid transfer reports from clueless journalist and liars.
