Watch Matty Longstaff score first goal for new club as Toon loanee spoils party for Mark Hughes

Newcastle United loanee Matty Longstaff bagged his first goal for Mansfield Town over the weekend, scoring in a 2-0 win over Bradford City.

The game was Mark Hughes’ first in charge of The Bantams following his appointment at the League Two side last week.

A surprise move from the former Man City boss and a return to football over three years on from his sacking at Southampton, but it was soon spoiled by our Geordie midfielder!

Mattty hadn’t scored for over two years, however that changed as he poked home to seal another big wins for The Stags; who are now unbeaten in 13 games in League Two.

Interestingly, the 21-year-old actually started the game on the right side of a front three, with Mansfield boss Nigel Clough appearing to use the midfielder in a slightly more advanced role since his deadline day loan move.

You can watch his goal here, with his scruffy strike coming 1:15 into the highlight video below:

Great to see Matty enjoying his football again, even if he has had to drop down to League Two in a bid to get regular game time.

That said, with just over 12 months remaining on his current deal on Tyneside and him currently playing in the fourth tier of English football just a few weeks before his 22nd birthday, he has a lot of work to do if he wants to force his way into Eddie Howe’s future plans.
