Newcastle set to make shock move for Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Antonio Rudiger this summer.

The German international could be available on a free transfer this summer, with him yet to sign a new contract at Chelsea.

As a result, Mike McGrath – one of the first journalists to confirm we were closing in on Kieran Trippier – reports that we are lining up an ambitious move for the 29-year-old should he leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Real Madrid are named as one of the others club interested, with several other Champions League clubs said to be circling, however it highlights just how big our new owners are thinking that we’ve now entered the race.

That said, The Telegraph state that we are ‘unlikely to smash their wage structure to accommodate players on more than £200,000-a-week’ – something that may limit our ability to attract him given we are currently levels below the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid.

The 6ft 3′ defender has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League since Thomas Tuchel arrived at Chelsea, being monstrous in the air, difficult to beat on the deck, a man mountain in both boxes and a player who loves to carry the ball out from the back.

This one feels highly unlikely, but it’s exciting to think this is the sort of player our new owners are hoping to attract this summer!
