The Chronicle have issued a significant update on Matt Targett’s future this morning, revealing that a deal is in place should we wish to make his move permanent.
As revealed by Lee Ryder, Newcastle are believed to have an option to sign the left-back for £15m from Aston Villa – a fee that was pre-agreed prior to his January switch to St James’ Park.
Based on his performances so far, it seems highly likely that we activate this deal agreed in principle, with the former Southampton man barely putting a foot wrong so far.
Ironically, the 26-year-old only ended up on Tyneside as former Toon target Lucas Digne pushed him down the pecking order at Villa Park, however he’s completely outshone the Frenchman ever since.
In four starts so far, he’s helped us to wins over Everton, Brentford and Brighton, also keeping Jarrod Bowen quiet in our 1-1 draw at West Ham last month.
The Chronicle claim that Aston Villa are already exploring left-back signing this summer – presumably someone who will arrive as back-up to Digne – suggesting we seem likely to sign Targett on a permanent deal, as things stand.
Absolute no brainer.
