Howe explains Saint-Maximin & Joelinton absence & offers update on 3 players who limped off

Eddie Howe has explained why Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton were missing from the matchday squad for Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Southampton on Thursday night.

He’s revealed that the Frenchman is unwell, however he is “unsure when he’ll return” – suggesting there’s a chance he’s also missing for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.

As for Joelinton, Howe has confirmed that his ongoing groin issue was “too sore” for him to play yesterday, but hopes it is “not serious.”

The NUFC boss also feels confident Bruno Guimaraes was forced off with cramp – not a muscle injury – and it seems the same could apply to Emil Krafth; another player who limped off in the second half at St Mary’s.

Fabian Schar is also “managing a groin problem”, but Howe “hopes” the Swiss centre-back will be OK – despite him going down on several occasions during the game.

Here’s what he’s had to say when speaking after our superb 2-1 win.

Howe on Saint-Maximin and Joelinton:

Allan was ill tonight and we’re unsure when he’ll return.

“Joe has had a groin problem since I came in. He’s had to manage it through games.

“Yesterday, it got too sore for him.

“We hope it’s not serious.”

Howe on Guimaraes:

“I think it’s cramp – I’m not 100% sure.

“His English is improving – but it’s not perfect – and I asked if he had cramp and he nodded his head.

“Hopefully it’s nothing serious.”

Howe on Krafth:

“Emil possibly has cramp – but we’re not sure.

“We’ll have to wait and see.”
