Dan Burn reveals VAR theory & what the referee told him after Kai Havertz elbow

“I can guarantee that if it was the other way round, I wouldn’t be on the pitch!

This was Dan Burn’s damning theory when asked about the Kai Havertz elbow that left his temple cut and swollen after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

The Geordie giant believes it was a red card and “naughty” of the German, yet it seems the referee thought otherwise – telling Burn that Havertz avoided a red because “he was looking at the ball the whole time.”

As for the penalty decision that also went against us, it sounds like the NUFC dressing room felt robbed after the game, with Burn even admitting that “you don’t get the rub of the green” when you come to play the big boys.

Speaking to NUFC TV, he also questioned just what the rules are these days when it comes to “clear and obvious” errors, feeling it’s all went “a little bit funny” since VAR came in.

Dan Burn on the elbow from Kai Havertz:

“I thought it was a sending off.

“I can guarantee that if it was the other way round, I wouldn’t be on the pitch!

“But the ref said that because he was looking at the ball the whole time, that’s why he hadn’t been [sent off]

“I thought it was a bit naughty, but he’s not given it and he’s ended up scoring at the end, so it’s cost us a little bit.

“Can’t complain about it too much, as I said, these top quality players can punish you if you switch off for a second and that’s what happened.”

Dan Burn on the penalty incident:

“I haven’t seen it back, but from what the lads are saying it should have been a penalty.

“I think that happens when you come to the big grounds…you probably don’t get the rub of the green sometimes.

“I don’t really know what the rules are anymore to be honest.

“It’s just getting a bit disappointing.

“It’s went a little bit funny ever since VAR came in.

“I don’t know what ‘clear and obvious’ counts as, it just sort of covers people’s backs.”

  1. Silly Dan. Of course he can’t guarantee anything. Much as I’da liked Havertz off the pitch, it was a dead cert yellow and nothing more.
Let’s get on with climbing the table.

  2. Having watched the video numerous times it appears that Havertz did go in elbow first, but his elbow was ricocheted into Burn’s face by Burn having his arm outstretched.
    Basically the equivalent of a 50 – 50 tackle.
