Jamie Carragher reveals why NUFC new boy really impressed him during 1-0 defeat to Chelsea

Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on January recruit Matt Targett as he observed the full back during Sunday’s defeat to Chelsea.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender picked out Targett’s crossing and set-piece ability in particular, stating ‘that left foot of his is so good.’

In the game, Targett contained Hakim Ziyech – which he did with minimal fuss – joined the press effectively and offered a useful outlet down the left; where he delivered more accurate crosses than anyone else on the pitch (3).

His delivery from corners or free kicks were also on the money, with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar going close on a couple of occasions.

Here’s what Carragher said on the left-back, believing he’s a “huge improvement” on the players we’ve previously had operating in this position:

“The delivery from Targett has been on point again.

“On set-pieces, sometimes from open play, that left foot of Targett’s is so good.

“There was obviously a lot of talk about when Kieran Trippier came in and he came in a little later.

“He’s played a lot more of course with Trippier’s injury, but it’s a huge improvement [in quality].”

While the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier were the big names of the window, Targett has gone somewhat under the radar but has been a crucial part of our defensive resurgence alongside Dan Burn.

Hopefully he can maintain this level of performance and we activate our reported option to sign him for £15 million – a bargain price for the level of quality he has shown in recent games.
