Former Mag forced to retire at the age of 23 after ongoing injury issues at Manchester Utd

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Paul Woolston has been forced to retire at the age of 23 due to an ongoing hip injury.

Born in North Shields, he was on our books from the age of 15 and made his debut for our U21s as a schoolboy before sealing a move to Manchester United in 2018.

Since then, he’s trained with the Red Devils first team on several occasions, learning from the likes of David De Gea after earning caps for England U17s and England U18s during his time on Tyneside.

He signed signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford last summer, however two operations on his hip in 2021 appear to have been unsuccessful, leading him to retire from professional football.

Here’s the emotional video he’s released on social media following today’s sad news, with Man Utd’s David De Ge and Dean Henderson wishing him all the best for the future:

Woolston had this to say when speaking to The Athletic about his decision to retire:

“To have to retire at just 23 has been really tough to come to terms with but I feel a lot more positive now.

“I am really proud of everything that I have achieved, many people dream of playing football at this level. Of course, I would have loved to have gone on further but it has been an absolute honour to represent Manchester United during my time here.”

“The support of my family, friends, team-mates, coaches, the medical staff and entire Manchester United Academy has been phenomenal.

“Everyone has played a major part in my journey by keeping my spirits up, allowing me to reflect positively on my playing experiences and begin to look to the future.

“Right now, I am fully focused on the next stage of my career. I am ready to use all of my learnings, resilience, drive and determination to make a real success of my life.”

A huge shame and a tough one to take for the local lad. We’d like to wish Paul all the happiness, success and good health in whatever he chooses to do next.
