The Athletic reveal top striker Steve Nickson has watched “extensively” – Summer bid incoming?

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has revealed that Newcastle are showing “a lot of interest” in Benfica goal machine Darwin Nunez.

Speaking on the latest Pod on The Tyne podcast, he’s explained how Head of recruitment Steve Nickson has liked him for “a long while” and watched him “extensively” this season, admitting there was an element of ‘surprise’ that we didn’t submit an offer for the striker in January.

The Uruguayan has 20 goals in just 22 league appearances for Benfica this season – 26 in all competitions – and has helped his side into the Champions League quarter-final where they will face Liverpool.

Here’s what Waugh had to say in his latest podcast appearance for The Athletic:

“He’s someone Newcastle, certainly Steve Nickson the head of recruitment, has liked for a long while, they’ve watched a lot.”

“There was almost surprise in January that they didn’t make a bid in the end because there has been a lot of interest.

They’ve watched him extensively.”

Benfica have allegedly placed a £67 million price tag on their star striker, with the South American seemingly gaining more media coverage every week.

Bringing in the 22-year-old be a huge statement of intent from our new owners, alongside the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, and hopefully a long-term solution to our lack of goal threat.

It won’t be an easy task convincing Nunez to come to Tyneside considering the number of clubs that are interested in him, but it looks like we’ll give it a good go this summer!
