Amanda Staveley admits January bid collapsed for “incredible player” due to concerns over his character

Amanda Staveley has revealed that Newcastle made a big for an “incredible player” in January, but pulled the plug on his proposed move to St James’ Park after references on his character came back negative.

Our co-owner claims that the unnamed player ended up joining another club instead as the feedback following our bid was that he was “selfish” and “not a team player.”

Speaking to The Athletic, here’s what she had to say about a mystery January move:

“We looked at one player in January and were a bit unsure about him.

“We bid for him but he joined another club.

“References came back that he was selfish.

“He’s an incredible player but not a team player.

“We wanted to make sure our chemistry is right.”

I’d be very interested to know exactly who this is, however it is hugely promising to see that our new owners value the importance of squad morale and a happy dressing room – knowing what an adverse effect it can have to bring in big names who aren’t team players.

This is what made our move for Kieran Trippier such a brilliant one, as we not only signed a world class player with vast experience, but also a leader who offers as much off the pitch as he does on it.

Any guesses for who Amanda Staveley may have been referring to?

  1. Aubameyang or Dele Alli for me as they both have a history for shall we say having an over inflated ego.

  2. Must be Dele Alli or Auba. Everyone knows their attitudes are hindering their careers. Although Auba seems at home at Barcelona

  3. I assumed it was Dele Alli, if it was they seem to have made the correct choice. I don’t think he’s even getting a start in a poor Everton side. Strange how a player can look so good then drop off so quickly. Looked excellent for one season.
