Chairman urges NUFC to re-sign former Mag – Says he’s ‘one to watch’ & would score 20 goals

According to Peterborough United chairman, Daragh MacAnthony, Newcastle should bring Ivan Toney back to St James’ Park this summer.

After 49 goals in 94 games for the Posh, MacAnthony was the man who reluctantly sold Toney to Brentford back in 2020 – and the former NUFC striker has gone on to be equally prolific in West London.

With 33 goals last season during their promotion campaign and 13 goals so far this term with the newly promoted Bees, the Peterborough owner believes Toon chiefs would make Toney a top target “if they had any sense.”

He reckons the 26-year-old would score at least 20 goals a season under Eddie Howe, feeling Newcastle fans would “worship the ground he walks on” as he’d only become more prolific when surrounded by “better players.”

Here’ what he’s had to say when discussing a potential summer move for his former striker:

“Ivan Toney playing in a top ten team creating lots of chances would score 25 league goals, all day long.

“I think lots of teams are missing a beat there if he isn’t sold for mega dough in the summer.

“That’s not just because I have a cut on it, I just honestly think if you’re looking at young strikers out there [he’s one of the best].”

“In the summer there will be two strikers to watch [outside of Halaand and Mbappe] and that’s Toney and Tammy Abraham.

“If Newcastle had any sense, they would be signing him [Toney] and bringing him back.

“The Geordies would absolutely worship the ground he walks on.

“He would score 20 goals in a Newcastle team with better players.”

Toney was on our books for four seasons between 2015/16 and 2018/19, but only went on to make four competitive appearances for the club – scoring no goals in that time and instead spending the majority of his time out on loan at the likes of Scunthorpe, Wigan, Shrewsbury and Barnsley.

Because we didn’t give him his chance back then, I’m not actually convinced he’d be all that keen on a return to Tyneside – especially when he’s likely to have plenty offers coming his way this summer.

Would you like to see him back in a black and white shirt?
